Band promotion pictures
« on: February 23, 2010, 11:17:06 AM »
So I was asked at the weekend to take some pictures of the my friends band. Just some picture out about in town and of course where most bands end up... The bar.

Would like to know your thoughts on a few of them.

All pictures were taken in Madrid

Gran Via

Random steps, plaza españa

Plaza España

Bar

I seem to have lost load of the color when I upload it to Flickr :S

Bar again. Lead singer

Only cropped the pictures, so any Photoshop ideas to make them into great band promo pics please let me know.
I have more if interested.

Nice series, I like your chosen poses.
#1 crop off some of the bright sky on top, reduce shadows on subjects, a little tight on the left.
#2 crop right or add canvas left. This one is my favorite.
#3 adjust shadows and highlights on subjects
#4 I like it as is. The grey pillar on the right is distracting though.
#5 I think it is too bright.

Don

Great work here.
I like #2 best and probably would like it better with the right side cropped in tight.
The background on #3 has too many people in the background for my liking. Thought it might be interesting to take the image from ground level looking up or from above looking down on the band members (may remove some of the distracting elements from the background). The height decision may relate to how the band sees itself or want to promote itself.
#5 looks very 'flashed' and detail is lost.

Regards

Paul

A few comments (being the quarterback on Monday morning); #1, due to the forced depth of field that you need to have them all in focus, there is a pole growing out of the back of the guy on the right which does the shot no good. The overall background (to my liking) is a bit busy. While positioning the girl she is blocking one guy and that creates an overall imbalance of the composition. The tight scene works for #2 but unfortunately you chopped off the hand of the guy on the left front. In #3 I see a similar imbalance as in #1 and cutting of the girl in the front is not so charming. #4 is nice and seems very informal, I like that shot. I think you need to give them more 'breathing space' as I do like the locations such as in #2 and #3. I do think overall the shots are not bad, it's just that they can be done better if you give a bit more attention to the details.

Just a brief comment on the two exterior pictures...#1 ans #3. I like the compositions. But the band members need to be in sunlight or at least bright light or similar light as the backgrounds. It would be better yet if the band members were in bright light while the backgroud was in shadow...use the contrast to your advantage not disadvantage. IMHO the lighting on the faces does not do them justice. If squinting is an issue get them in open bright shade and use a fill flash. The harsh shade is distracting relative to the bright sunny backgrounds. Make sense?
