Post by: roblanglois on June 01, 2015, 10:17:01 PM
HI! I HAVE AN A77 AND A57. WHEN I CONNECT MY BOWER SFD296S DIGITAL AUTOMATIC FLASHGUN TO THE HOT SHOE THE POP UP FLASH STILL POPS UP AND BOTH FLASHES FIRE.

HAVE I DONE SOMETHING INCORRECT IN MY SETTINGS? IF ANYONE HAS ANY IDEAS I SURE WOULD APPRECIATE THEM.
REGARDS,
ROB

Welcome Rob, hopefully some-one here can help with a solution.
I am not familiar with the flashgun you have, but from the short description of the problem, I would look if the camera i recognising the flashgun.  Can you borrow a Sony flash to see if you get a similar response from the cameras?...john

Hello and you are welcome. I have read the specification of your flash and this flash seem to work only in manual modes http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/675283-REG/Bower_SFD296S_SFD296S_Digital_Auto_Zoom.html
No you haven't done any thing wrong it seems that the flash and camera are not fully communicating. Try first to clean with pure alcohol the contacts of flash and camera

It did not occur to me to suggest cleaning the contacts but it is good that Rex agrees the problem appears to be the camera recognising that the flash has been connected.... john

What mode do you have the camera in?  Also what setting do have for flash mode on the camera?

As the flash looks to be a dumb flash in that it does not talk with the camera.  Since there is no communication between the flash and the camera it cannot tell that the flash is attached.  So if the camera is in Auto Flash mode it will try to pop up the built in flash.  Change the setting to Fill Flash and see how it goes.
