Cant decide which head
« on: January 25, 2010, 06:57:50 PM »
Ball or 3 way?
Looking at this http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-manfrotto-804rc2-tripod-head/p1012868&Type=1
or this http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-giottos-mh1302-652-series-ii-ball-head/p1025889
to go on Giottos carbon fibre tripod.

The problem I have is I practice practically all types of photography so need one for macro sports wildlife still life and portraits etc..

The 3 way isnt ideal for for wildlife although its what I currently use albeit a cheapo one and just tend to loosen all controls so it has some resistance but I can still move it fairly quickly but this doesnt give me 100 per cent support (more like a mono pod I suppose).

The ball head isnt ideal for macro and precise adjustments but this one does feature a tension adjustment which may allow me to make small adjustments better than usual?

Have you used either of these or tried macro with a ball or wildlife with a 3 way help please!

I am not an expert, but in a recent class I attended we discussed the different Tripods and Heads. One of the students had the Giottos MH1302-652 Series II Ball Head, it was very good, even the instructor stated that he uses it (sales pitch maybe), but the good thing about it (as stated) was that if you want to move your framing one degree at a time without loosing the other settings, this device will meet your need. Let me see if I can create a situation to illustrate, assume you are shooting a Pano, you need to maintain everything at the same level meanwhile turning the camera from left to right or up & down, this will allow you do so in the same plain of choice step by step simply by turning one of these knobs as shown.

Whereas, other models if you loosen the part you need to change chances are that you might move it more or even less than you need, hence the need to recompose.

IMO, it is a matter of preference, which one do you feel more comfortable with using. Many times I wished I have the Manfrotto 804RC2 Tripod Head style type of heads. Also, it all depends on the type of photography you want to do eventually the choice would be. As I said I am not an expert, maybe others can shed some more light.

I have the 804RC2 head and have had it for a year now, have found it really good.
Have done a few wildlife images with the 804, i just loosen 2 of the 3 adjustments and found it fairly good.
Have recently got the 322 head for wildlife.

If you are looking to get the 804 i have been looking to get the 410 geared head, and will be selling mine with 2 spare QR plates.

It all boils down to personal preference. I use both and prefer the ball head for field work and the 3 way for studio. I would nto be able to say one is better than the other??? I would go into a camera shop with your camera and play around with them. You will get a good feel for what you personally prefer.

Totally agree with Stef's remark - tinkering with them in a shop will give you a good sense of the pros and cons of each.

The models you identify in the opening post are both very good pieces of kit - either would be great.

(for the record, like John I'm using a Manfrotto 322 RC for everything :))
