I guess this is something most of us have encountered at one time or another but the weight limits on carry on are such a restriction. My last holiday I ended up wearing a gillet that weighed about four kilos with all the stuff I had packed in it!
Anyway when I got back I weighed my backpack which was 2.5 kilos empty! I have therefore decided to get a lightweight shoulder bag which weighs at least half that (so approx 1.3). I'll pack my backpack in my suitcase if I need to use it on the actual holiday, although I have to say I generally don't.
The bag needs to fit a ff body with a wide angle and 70-200mm lens, plus flash and several batteries, cards, etc.
Anyone got any recommendations? I would go down to my local camera shop but I live in Bedford, which is devoid of any decent camera retailers.
I realised that size and weight would be a problem for me on my recent trip to Iceland (10kg weight, 115cm dimensions limit).
I ended up with a 'Fancier King Kong 40' backpack - which was able to swallow a huge amount of kit
A900 + VG + Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 USD
Sigma 24-70 f/2.8
Sony 100 Macro
Minolta 85 f/1.4 G
Sony 50 f/1.4
+ 3 x spare batteries, Lee Filters, Intervalometer + a few odds and ends
Total weight 10kg (exact!)
The CZ 16-35 also fitted in the bag, but found a temporary home in my wife's bag as we went through check-in :)
(I am terrible at carrying too much kit with me, should learn to trim it down)
Ditto, I take way too much, but then so often end up in the position of needing the very thing I have left behind because I didn't think I'd need it! Roll on teleportation.....
I had not come across the King Kong bag, but I think I might have to go for the next one down as the weight for the 40 appears to be 1889g, which is heading in the right direction, but not quite as light as I was after.
Otherwise my tripod holder, sorry I mean my girlfriend, will end up taking stuff.....
Bags are way to personal. I have a Kata DC 445. It fits the A99 with either the 70-300G or 24-70CZ attached and the other lens as well. If I take the macro it is in its own case but the 50mm F1.4 will easily fit in the bag but not used much now that I have the 24-70 F.8.
Sometimes I will take my Think tank back pack but they are even more personal so what suits one may annoy another.
Best thing is to jump on the net with a few favourite brands and do some research. If you do not have a local shop, they are not heavy to have delivered.....john
Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated.
I am going though the major brands, the problem I am finding is that it a slow process as often you have to dig deep to find the weight, which is the crucial factor. I thought the Tamrac system pro 12 would be the answer, but it's just too heavy.
THE QUEST CONTINUES!
Another option is http://www.guragear.com/ (http://www.guragear.com/).
They get very good reviews, but are expensive
And if you're looking for a large backpack, consider http://fstopgear.com/ (http://fstopgear.com/)
Again, expensive, but look to be very good (added in case others find the thread as part of a general 'What Bag' search)
I travel a lot and have never had my carryon weighed. I use either the Mini Trekker AW or the Slingshot 202AW. Both are small, the mini trekker carries a little bit more. With the Slingshot I can fit 1 body, 16-35/2.8, 24-70/2.8 and 80-200/2.8. A few accessories in the pockets but not much more. The Mini Trekker is not much larger but holds quite a bit more gear such as an extra lens and flash.
