Lets see if the on sensor Phase detection AF is as fast & accurate as the existing one.

If Sony have managed to get On-Sensor AF working at a speed and accuracy to rival existing off-sensor Phase detect AF it will be very significant for the whole camera market.

Currently compacts & bridge cameras can offer good quality and large zoom ranges in a small and light package, but at the cost of the inevitable delay between first pressing the shutter and taking the shot.

With fast, accurate on-sensor AF this advantage of the DSLR is removed - and for the large numbers of people who never purchase anything beyond the DSLR + Kit lens a bridge will become a better option (smaller, lighter, sealed & longer zoom).

It could end up making a big dent in DSLR sales.

There are people who actually think LENS stabilization is better than sensor shifting!
