4/3 System
« on: September 13, 2005, 11:24:44 PM »
I honestly think Olympus's 4/3 thing has always been a bit of a joke, which is a shame as I quite liked Olympus before they knocked out the naff E-1.  The 'special' lenses are expensive... I mean, nearly £5000 for a 300mm 2.8?, that's well over nikons own. They say its a 600mm, but it's not really, it's just cropped because of the puny ccd the whole system runs off. Which brings me to the view through the finder - it is horribly constricted, certainly seemed so when I tried out the E-300. It's bad enough at this stage suffering APS-sized views, surely? In ten years we'll probably look back and say 'remember when digtal wasn't full-frame?'

Just thought I'd kick off a subject.
SB-400, 28-200/3.5-5.6 AF G, 50/1.8 AF D, 60/2.8 AF D Micro-Nikkor, 105/2.8 AF-S VR G Micro-Nikkor, 70-180/4.5-5.6 AF D Micro-Nikkor, 200/4 AF D Micro-Nikkor, 70-300/4.5-5.6 AF-S VR G, Nikon PB-6... Yes I quite like macro.

I would like to be using Med Format digital but just cant afford it. 3/4 is a cheap option don’t know how they got so many pro's to use it though.

yeah its ultra wierd huh!

All I know about the Ily 4/3 system is that it has some special kingd of dust control.

Other than that, I have to agree super high priced lenses.

Mind you in the last few days of the Oly OM system they put the 50/1.4 lens price up to about £600 new.  And the OM3Ti was about £1400 body only.  Leica Money.  I mean even the NIkon FM-3a is way lowering in price than that!

Good luck Oly.  What they need is for Sigma to launch a 4/3 camera.  But is there a market?

If their dust control worked as advertised, I'd probably be tempted to buy it, and even then, only if I didn't use the 7D. I've yet to see CCD dust show up on more than a few of my images. It's the AS that keeps it off, I'd imagine.
Apparently, the CCD is capable of shaking all its dust off, and comes equipped with some kind of changeable adhesive strip that collects the dust (if memory serves...). Seems attractive... but I'd rather invest in a camera system that has a sufficiently large lens line and is mostly backward-compatible.

I seriously doubt Sigma will launch a 4/3 camera, unless Foveon designs a sensor in that format. Olympus has only made it harder on itself by creating an entirely new lens line.
Good luck to Oly. They'll probably need it.

I bet their dust cleaning system doesn't remove sticky old pollen.

The reason I left Canon (17 years in Canon, 9 months a Minoltian):  the D30 market was dropping, and I had two of them, bought for good cheap price.  I figured if I was going to dump the D30 for a 10D I'd better be quick about it.  Plan was to sell 2x D30 + 200/2.8 L and get a 10D + 300/4 IS (just as the 20D hit the shops and the 10D price dropped)

The clue:  IS.

Then I saw the 7D's AS and the killer layout.  Once I'd decided that most of my Canon cash was about to be sold to get the 10D + 300/4 IS I'd have a look at Nikon/Pentax/Oly while I was reading about the 7D.

The Oly 4/3 - lens price!  Crazy.  Couldn't even consider it.  Wouldn't.  Won't.  Oly really needs someone to play the game.  But now they have 3x bodies!  They must be making some money out of the idea?  At least Sig have made some lenses.  Although its only the cheap end of the market ones though.  Nothing exotic.

Sigma offers a few 4/3 lenses? Didn't even know that. Oly's fortunate that Sigma's supporting the system... Oly's backed itself into a corner.

They must be making money from the system.  They are on the third camera and have recently added (I thnk) 3 new lenses!
