Title: Using 70-300G on NEX-5
Post by: philjo on July 30, 2011, 06:02:25 PM
Has anyone got any experience of using the Sony 70-300G lens on the NEX-5?
Not yet bought the alpha mount adaptor for my NEX-5. I have the 70-300G. I wondered how it would handle considering the size of the lens/adaptor on the small body.
Does the AF work OK? I did see one report that the AF when used on the NEX is slower than the same lens used on the Alpha SLR body.

Many thanks.

Yes it works. I got one adaptor for my wife's NEX5 to use with my 70-300G.

Only thing it looks odd to have a small camera 'piggy back' on a huge hefty lens. Better to use the tripod mount that comes with the adaptor. Left hand aches due to the heavy lens.

And update the firmware with the latest from SONY website. Mount the lens and adaptor before you do that. For me it did not work at first. Then mounted the lens on the camera (should I say the othe way - mounted the camera on the lens?? ;-) ) and updated the firmware and hey presto... it works.

Thanks for that Subbu.

My lens adaptor arrived this week. I tried it out at the weekend tithe 70-300G on the NEx-5. It worked fine but as the AF is a bit slower you sometimes get an out of focus image if the object is moving (like a bird etc)
I didn't need to update the firmware as it was already on the latest version when I bought the camera.

The reason that the Nex are slower is because they works with contrast autofocus system insteat phase detection system

Unless you use the new LA-EA2 adapter.

There are two firmware updates for the Nex 5: one is for the camera and one is for the adapter. You need to mount the adapter to the camera, before you do the adapter firmware upgrade. Yes, the lens does work and yes the AF is a bit slower.

Here's a photo taken at a school function. Evening after sunset,  some halogen lights to light up. 70-300G on NEX5.
ISO1600, f6.3, 1/60 at 70mm

Straight out of the camera.

I don't have the 70-300G but i have the 70-200G with the LA-EA2, i love the combo and it works great, it's totally capable of replacing my a77 other than shooting comfort, especially for portrait. The focus is lightening fast and result is great. I'm receiving 70-400 in a couple of days, very exciting to try that.

At those length i use them for sports so OSS is not really a concern at all. Cheers
