NEX-6 or NEX-7
« on: December 21, 2013, 07:38:20 AM »
There are some good deals on the 6 and 7.  The 6 would seem to have better focusing and the new hot shoe and I am leaning that way.

But I can get the NEX-7 with the 16-50 for only a little more money.

Do you have any advice?

If you don't need 24MP go with the NEX-6.

If you even google "NEX 6 or 7" a lot of threads in various forums will show up.  There are a ton of discussions comparing these two cameras.  Particularly, prior to the release of Sony's two decent full-frame mirrorless cameras the NEX 6 and 7 were what people were talking about.

I debated between the two and decided on the 6.  I really dislike noise and many of the reviews indicated the 6 handled noise better with it's smaller sensor.   Absolutely true as I can really push the ISO and am amazed at the noise-free quality.  Absolutely outshines my A-77 in that regard.

You will have to compare the list of features on each one but don't be sold just by the 24mp sensor as, unless you are cropping/printing large-size, you don't actually need 24 mps.

Also, consider getting the 6 body only and getting the Sigma 19mm as it's a super cheap lens and usually on sale and it's super sharp and consistently gets excellent reviews.

Just my opinions and others may differ!

Thanks.

The NEX-6 is what I am looking at getting but wasn't sure if I was missing any key features that make the NEX-7 better.

I have a couple of HVL-F42AM flashes.  I guess I could use both of those wireless with the NEX-7 without any extra accessories.  But with the NEX-6, I would need to buy an HVL-F20M.

I own both the NEX-6 and the NEX-7 and have found that when I go shooting I invariably grab the 6. Although one might discuss the lower noise characteristic of the NEX-6, I found that this was not the reason that I chose that camera. The reasons, in bullet form, were:

1. Ergonomics and control layout: I found I could select the controls I wanted to use faster and easier with the NEX-6. I am accustomed to the mode dial control and this a physical control of this type is lacking on the NEX-7.

2. WiFi connectivity: One thing that annoyed me about the NEX series of cameras is that one had to use an IR transmitter to trigger the camera remotely. The Remote Camera App for the NEX-6 allowed me to trigger the camera with my iPhone or my iPad Mini. Plus, the nice preview screen on the iPAD Mini provided a nice view of the subject prior to shooting the camera.

3. The kit lens that comes with the NEX-6 collapses when the camera is turned off. This made it that much easier to carry about.

Oddly, though the pixel count is larger for the NEX-7 I generally did not regard this as either a plus or minus. The one exception is that my wife likes to make 24 x 36 inch prints. When she knew that the photograph would be used for this purpose she would choose the NEX-7. However, for must of our family shots and internet usage, we just as soon as use the NEX-6.

You can use any older iISO flash with the adapter on Nex 6. I use the HVL-F43AM on Nex 6 with the (ADP-MAA)

For the Nex-6, you cannot use the onboard flash as a wireless controller.  This is a real let down.

I decided not to get a NEX-6 or NEX-7.  After doing some soul searching, I am going to wait and see what the new generation of e-mount cameras are like.  If Sony doesn't "get it right", I'm going to go micro four thirds.

Yes, the A6000 looks pretty good. A pity it isn't touch screen but the price is good.

I unloaded my NEX-6 after owning it for 3 months.  Took a small loss but well worth it, while I wait for my Alpha 600 to arrive.  I'll suffer in silence with my Alpha a7r :)
