A7 Firmware Compatibility
« on: September 05, 2015, 04:28:34 AM »
Does anyone know if the new Sony firmware upgrade version 2.00 for the A7, A7r and A7s is compatible with Windows 10?
It speeds up the start-up time for these cameras but Sony's website implies that it is compatible with Windows 7 and 8 only. :|

Any luck finding out whether it works yet. I have had a good look around the internet but could not find any answers.
Download it and see if it runs.

"Download it and see if it runs." You are joking surely? Do you want me to brick my camera? :D

I have searched the internet and found a couple of people who claim to have done just that with Win 10. However, lot's of people have bricked there cameras while following the instructions from Sony and using a proven OS. Sony have not yet got around to checking out Windows 10 and will say nothing until they do.

I have received an email from Brian Smith, a Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer no less! He wrote, "The OS is fine but the default browser Microsoft Edge is not compatible. You must update using Internet Explorer - NOT Microsoft Edge." I think he is referring to installing Apps when using a browser as you do not need a browser for firmware, other than to download the file.

I have a laptop that runs Windows 7. So I will use the laptop to be safe.

It's been a while since i've done any firmware updates. I had meant to download the file, open it and see if it runs or says it's incompatible before plugging camera in. Having thought about the update process i realise that would not have worked as it needs the camera to be plugged in to run.
Using old laptop is certainly your best bet.

Using the laptop running Windows 7 it upgraded the camera to version 2.00, but not without some heart stopping moments. I followed the instructions, obtained from the Sony US website, exactly to the letter and it was not as they show. I had to leave the camera attached for much longer than the instructions said, make some guesses and finally I was forced to turn it off. When I disconnected the camera and turned it back on, it had updated OK. How I am not sure.

I have never had problems in the past when updating my other cameras, although the update process has always been somewhat stressful. Sony software is a pain in the butt.

I was unable to update the GPS Assist Data for my A77, using Windows 10.

Good to hear it has been a success. I agree with the update process being stressful. Never enjoyed doing the updates myself and hoping it was going to work without killing the camera.
