Maybe I'm just looking at it over a too simplified way by seeing the APS format giving a longer focal length to a 35mm "ff slr" lens ???...<SNIP>...

Frank- the APS size cameras do NOT give you a longer length they just crop the image. I can get the same "focal" length with the A900 by simply cropping the image and due to the higher pixel count this is not a problem. The only advantage that I see with APS size cameras is the fact that they use the sweet spot of each lens. This means lenses of not the highest quality might still give you perfectly acceptable images on an APS size camera. For a ff camera the lenses really need to be outstanding i.e. corner sharpness will be very visible.
??? Sorry Stef... I think I'm confused - - - yet again [scatch my head smiley here] Appreciate your answer to my Q :)

Fud- LOL! Asking Sony...well always worth a try ;) Borneo sounds great- but I would be more interested in the scuba diving part of it....so I would have to ask Sony nicely for an underwater housing ;)
Stef.

Mmm... while asking Mr SONY could you ask.... if he'll give me an in depth tour of his alpha range cameras ??? :D

Having looked at a couple of the videos on youtube it looks like the A700 replacement doesn't have a pop up flash, so would expect the better veiwfinders seen in A850&900, and seems just a tadge bigger on the top.

Could they look to go to a full frame camera BUT with less mega-pixels. Then with larger receptors on the sensor this could potentially reduce the amount of noise and therefore give the camera the better noise performance at higher ISO that an A700 replacement would ideally have enabling shooting at higher speeds.

I had been thinking/hoping similar. I was expecting the A700 replacement to be full-frame but with less mega-pixels than the 850/900, incorporate HD video, live-view, a full swivel screen, along with speed and lower noise enhancements.

Frank - the focal length multiplier is nothing but another word for crop factor!
Here is an example with a picture:
http://www.millhouse.nl/digitalcropfactorframe.html

And here is the explanation:
http://www.dpreview.com/learn/?/Glossary/Optical/Focal_Length_Multiplier_01.htm
http://www.dyxum.com/columns/photoworld/fundamentals/Focal_length_magnification.asp

Hope this clarifies it a bit?

I was expecting the A700 replacement to have even more bells and whistles but not FF. As someone pointed out earlier in this thread the 7XX has always been the model to incorporate most of the "tech" while the 9XX series do away with some but ramp up others to tailor to the "pro" sector.
APS-C is all about smaller sensor, hence smaller, lighter, cheaper bodies and lenses. As Stef. points out you do not get more tele power with the same lens compare to the FF but only crop factor. In other words honing in on the middle portion of what a FF lens would "see". If you are not using DT lenses I really don't see the point of APS-C besides the lower cost of the body and the slight increase in the DOF by doing away with the edges which may or may not be what you want. I can understand why there should be a FF at the price point and megapixel count of the A700 and that would truly be the 8XX series to me.

Well... I'm terribly embarrassed to be admitting that I'd totally misunderstood the dif between APS and FF :-[ :-[ but that's now clarified. Oh well... we all make mistakes at times

With this discussion about FF I'd been looking back in some of the other forum areas [a900/a850 and the a500/550 ones] that I don't go to normally. In the a500/550 section I came across the link from Stef for these cameras and then another link for Alpha Mount World review so paid a visit to view both. Interesting reads for sure. Also hadn't realised I joined that site 1 yr and 48 weeks ago [more embarrassment :-[ ;)] and was checking in the a900 forum section there. Found a link to the a900 video but it's now dead. Reading through the comments there is a mention [from around the 11th/12th this month] that there a rumours that the a900 is being withdrawn [?] from Sony Centres and that the a850 is a replacement for the a900 ??? Maybe this rumour should be discussed in another area rather than in this thread?

As said Frank- and I might be wrong, I don't really think the A850 is the replacement for the A900 but much more that they will come out with a high end professional camera that will very likely cost an arm and leg. They have always stressed that the A900 is NOT a professional camera in their own opinion. So we'll see. I just can't see them coming out with many more "amateur" cameras as they have already plenty of those.

Why is there this obsession with a FF a700 replacement?

.... But do we really need a A7XX in APS with AVCHD Video Capture? If that's what we are to get as a replacement for the A700, then I guess I will be buying a A850 or A900.

Went to Focus on Imaging at the NEC (UK) today. Large Sony stand but didn't see any new preview stuff :(
Uk always seems second best to everywhere else.
