Four new Alphas to be announced in August
« on: July 25, 2010, 11:44:12 AM »
As the title says Sony are to announce four new Alphas in August but still no good news for people wanting a replacement for the A700 or A900 though apparently they are very much definitely in the works and may be announced by the end of the year.

The A550 is now discontinued and being replaced, that must have the shortest shop shelf life or any camera ever!

I think we all expected perhaps two, an A3xx and supposed (or wished for) A7xx. So then, two A2xx's and two A3xx's? That won't really be surprising, that's almost a bi-annual event, now.

I found a source for that info: http://sonyalpharumors.com/ft5-official-sony-a550-discontinued-double-replacement-to-be-announced-late-august/ However, the Sony Japan website doesn't say anything about "officially discontinuing" the A550, as Sony Alpha Rumours suggest (see here: http://www.sony.jp/dslr/products/DSLR-A550L/ ), though I'm sure it will definitely happen... one day.

It's gonna be one hot summer this year  (literally)

It'll be interesting to see how they stack up against each other... and what sensors they use. ;)

I know I should use such certain terms, but... I will anyway. I'm certain, really certain, that definitely, very soon that there will almost undoubtedly be something new in the shops.

I visited Bic Camera, the most important and influential camera and electronics product store to pick up a new hard drive. As always, I bee-line to the basement to drool over the three A900's they have on display there. The Sony displays were surprisingly sparse. There was only one A330 on display and the three A900's were still there. I'm almost without a shadow of doubt that they've made room for new stuff to hit the store very soon. There wasn't a whisper of an A500 or A550, nor A230 or A290.

Given that, and my level of excitement, there must be a new A5xx or A7xx, and probably an A2xx.

Interestingly, the lens display cabinets appear half full to what they usually are.

What I've noticed is that such news is usually available on the net long before anything touches the shelves in Japan. But that wasn't the case with the A700. I remember going to a special event where they had a model on a stage and sample cameras to play with, and sales reps, including English speaking ones... it was a real promo event. Albeit, held on the 11th floor of some hotel.

The other possibility is that they just needed to clear the display area for cleaning... and only the Sony display needed cleaning.

There's some more info out about the four new DSLR's http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/category/rumors/

Is that what the finished A580 is going to look like? Its got a similar wheel to the A700 and looks a lot less plastic-y than the A500/550

I don't know why they are still saying that the A550 is discontinued. The Sony.jp website doesn't mention such a thing at all: http://babelfish.yahoo.com/translate_url?doit=done&tt=url&intl=1&fr=bf-home&trurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sony.jp%2Fdslr%2Fproducts%2FDSLR-A550%2F&lp=ja_en&btnTrUrl=Translate

btw, if you mouse-over the picture, it says that it's A7XX (copying our way of describing an unknown model?)

The Sony Malaysia website shows the 550L as 'archived' products, and discontinued, though the body only a550 as current. They do not have links for the a450 or a500.

Funny you should say that. The A550 L is the only mid-range option, body-only is not on the Sony website here. I don't recall an A500 being released here, but definitely the A450 was never released in Japan.

New Sony Alpha Models Named: A55, A33, A560 and A580

Haven't read much yet about them as I'm at work so should not be on line :-[

A bit too quick as I didn't see Andrew's [winjeel] mentions the a560 :-[ Sorry...

I'm eager for an A700 replacement.  Depending on the spec,  I'll be looking at full frame as well.

I'm shooting more wedding and portraits these days, so the A700 will be the backup, so I guess we wait and see what Sony bring to the table.
