Photo Editing Challenge #2

Photo editing Challenge #2
Show us your digital editing skills in this new challenge that we have launched.

The object is to show off what you can do with your photo-editing software. This can
range from basic editing to produce a noticeable improvement in the photo all the
way to something that is an artistic interpretation of the original photo.

All edits submitted for consideration must meet the posting guidelines
(800 pixels on the longest side, 200kb maximum file size, etc.)

You may use the photo editor of your choice or more than one if you feel it necessary.
However, together with the edited photo you must include brief details of what editor(s) you used and
what steps were taken to achieve the result.
These details do not have to be a concise explanation running into a large manual, merely the basic steps taken
and which format (RAW or jpg) you used, to act as a learning process for others.

When you have finshed editing, please upload your image in this thread. A MAXIMUM OF TWO EDITS PER MEMBER PER CHALLENGE.
All edits submitted for consideration must meet the forum posting guidelines.
(800 pixels on the longest side, 200kb maximum file size, etc.)

The winner will then be invited to submit his/her photo, starting the process all over.
(Subject to change as this may take time to get going. (Please bear with us)

Copyright comment
For future "winners" who will be posting images for the challenge, please note that providing a large photo for
download is inviting theft. Therefore we must use only photos that are of little value to the owner.
If an edit makes the photo valuable, the editor must make that full size edit available to the owner (copyright holder)
in good faith. Thanks.

Editing challenge picture #2
This is an image taken by me using an A900, ISO 200, f11, 1/400 sec exp. It needs some help. You decide what: levels, colors,
contrast, crop, main subject, foreground, background ... your call.

This is a small version of the unadjusted image. As you can see it needs some help.
Do not use this as your original for editing. Please download either the RAW or jpg file.

Here is the RAW file ~ 35MB

Here is the jpeg file ~ 7MB

(The moderators will not participate in this challenge. When the challenge closes, the mods will then decide on a single winner.
We will then announce the winner and will allow discussion on entries and methods used.)
The challenge will close on Saturday 20th February at 20:00 hrs (UK Time)

Good luck and have fun.

Rob

Photoshop - straightened, warmed, noise and dust spots removed - then created the two versions colour and b&W

I like this one. Since it is landscape and it is my field of work I feel challenged doing some make-over here. I leveled the horizon and corrected the dust spot. That was the easy part. For the more harder part:

- Set the WB back to daylight
- Corrected the shadows, highlights and midtones
- Balanced the overall shot using a ND filter
- Corrected the color cast and add contrast
- Warm-up filter
- De-noise
- Sharpening
- Crop
- Add frame ...

Pff, what a list.

All I've got is i-photo that came with my mac.
played around with everything (exposure/straighten/saturation/temp/tint/contrast/sharpen) and cropped and de-spotted.  Really enjoy messing with someone else's picture! Did the jpeg

I just adjusted levels and colors, added a polarizing filter & a frame.

This version, I adjusted as above, cropped, no filters, added a frame I thought it goes well with the composition, enhanced contrast, structure, reduced noise.

All in CS3. Cropped, straightened, highlights recovered as much as possible (shadows/highlights), colour a hues adjusted (curves and levels) and selective noise removal/sharpening with Neat Image.

My effort

#1 RAW File, opened in PS Raw, edited the temp/exposure/contrast and vibrance. Cropped and opened in PS. Applied a warming filter and cloned a few bits out.

#2 as above in PS Raw but once opened in PS added a graduated ND filter and played with the contrast.

From RAW file.  Edited in Lightroom 2.6 only.  Other than the obvious crop and horizon alignment, there is extensive work re:
  • Localized: sharpening, contrast, saturaton, luminosity
  • Editing out distracting features, chroma and luminosity noise (from severe underexposure)

I intentionally tried to leave the original mood "as was" and only enhaced the atmospherics to emphasize that as much as possible.

Another version. Used previous make-over converted to B&W, mimick to Kodak film and used the opacity slider to make the color slighty shine through.

Opened in Sony IDC and output to Elements 5. Cloned out the crane and a dust/sensor spot. Straightened to the shore line and cropped as a pano. Extended canvas left and cleaned up area around small red boat. Light and color adjustments to get to what I felt was a sunrise look. (The shoreline fog looked like an early a.m. fog to me)

Open RAW file with PSE7, play with exposure, contrast etc. till I got the early morning feel (from memories of a kayaking trip). Straighten horizon, crop for wide vista feel with bid more sky then water. Clone out crane and buoy.

Peace!
