Do we have a February Challenge
« on: February 03, 2015, 11:46:02 PM »
Hi I've been busy so absent from the forum most of the last couple of months. Do we have a new challenge for this month? I hope so.

We have a Poll we need input on. See here.

Buying a Nikon doesn’t make you a photographer. It makes you a Nikon owner.

Sorry retoohs, we may not even have a forum by the end of the month. Gary, our founder is seriously considering shutting it down due to the lack of activity. We have had 553,503 page views in 2015 (at time of writing). seems a lot but it is almost all guests. When they see how quiet the forum is they have no incentive to join. We simply cannot compete with face book and others.

Charles (Ascot)

Can the forum settings be changed so that ALL topic postings made are sent to the members?

I ask because I don't always - rarely now :-[ - seem to have the time to come and visit the forum daily/weekly to see what is happening. I only get a notification (one only) on any topic/thread I have made a contribution to.

If I and others received notifications for all topics when posted it hopefully would tempt more members to visit and join in... and then tempt the 'guests/visitors' to consider joining?

Unfortunately no! it is a limitation of the software. As an administrator I really want that feature. The best it will allow is automatic notification of replies to topics you start or reply to. You can also get notification of any topic if you manually click 'Notify" at the top left of any new topic. But that requires you to manually find the new topic. I have an item that says 'show unread posts since last visit' which is right next to my avatar at the top of the page. I am not sure that you have that as it can be very useful.

Looks like this.....

                                Hello AScot
Show unread posts since last visit.
Avatar here                Show new replies to your posts.
There is one member awaiting approval.

Pity then. I feel/felt it would possibly rekindle some interest in the members that have 'drifted' away and need a possible nudge that something of interest has/is happening in the forum...

I do have the first two options you list but the third (when I looked) wasn't showing - possibly you approved the applicant which is why I don't see it ;)

Yes I approved the applicant.

I also checked the settings in your profile. You had two that were not set to the optimum to receive notifications. I changed them to the optimum.

You can see them by clicking on your profile under your avatar and click » Notifications.
Near the top you will see a line » 'For topics and boards I've requested notification on, notify me:' and » 'For topics and boards I've requested notification on, notify me of:'
I changed them both from the second option that you had to the first option.

Maybe such should be set as the default for all members... ;)

What about the POTM (picture of the month)?

I originally stated that if the Monthly challenges were a success, I would bring back the POTM. As you know the challenges were not satisfactory.

We could have the POTM back if the members would take part. It would be a case of a member who saw a photo that had been placed into the 'Images to Share' during that month and that he/she felt deserved nomination, to copy the link and place it into a monthly 'Nomination' folder that I would provide. In that folder I would give a tutorial on how to copy a link and place it into the 'Nomination' folder. At the end of the month, the members would send John or myself their vote for the winner and we would announce the winner.

If you want to discuss this idea for a POTM (Picture of the month) please let us do it here and make suggestions/objections as you see fit, using my guide above as the starting point. This way the success or failure will fall squarely on the membership. I think it would be worth a try, assuming our founder, Gary, will continue the forum. :(

It is a pity that the Forum does not have a facility for a "Like" button for posts made - a bit like LinkedIn etc. Is it something that is available in the program and just not activated? Something that Gary and the mods know of but decided not to activate?

I'm just thinking that if it was available then even the members that do visit but don't post would be able to have some input by casting their vote (like) for a photo shown - or even a thread that's been posted - but they don't feel they can/need/want to write something on for what ever reason?

We do not have a "Like" button as such. However we have a Karma feature which is disabled.

Karma is a feature that shows the popularity of a member. Members, if allowed, can 'applaud' or 'smite' other members, which is how their popularity is calculated.

It's the 'smite' part that worries me, I may get too high a count there.

Would it be worth introducing/enabling it for a trial period?

Are there other Forum type facilities or software that may have a 'Like' button that it may be worth 'thinking' of moving the forum to?

Would Gary and the Mods consider a 'mass posting' to all members a Poll to attempt to find out why they do not take a more active part in the Forum and able to comment on what they think 'may' get them back? Example question might be "Do you post/take part in other social media photo groups/forums? Please list... OR media such as facebook/twitter etc., could be listed and the "other".

Just trying to give some input for consideration to keep the forum going :)
