Challenge #1: Liquids Challenge
« on: February 13, 2007, 01:12:47 PM »
Liquids Challenge.

This challenge was inspired from recent threads and a recent rise in popularity of ‘dripping water’ photos (see: http://gallery.photo.net/photo/5508826-md.jpg). These have all been studio or still life, and so is this. So, sorry, no rain pictures, no dogs with sprinklers, or waves and bikinis: all studio / still life (indoors).

Challenge Closes 00:00 GMT 11th March 2007 (9am Tokyo time; 11am Sydney time; 7pm 10th March New York time)

Who’ll win?
Well, I don’t know. A moderator or two, and I will choose a worthy selection for your consideration (as per normal). The selection might include photos chosen because they are either technically correct, highly original, a great idea, funny, a great experimentation, a great improvement on your personal best, or just really different, (explanations will not be given for those finally chosen). Oh! There’ll also be a preference for photos dated this month, but we’ll still be happy with your old fav’s. Then, as per normal, everyone will be invited to vote for the best.

Prize
“Huh? Wha?” Yeah, a prize! I’ve entered some previous challenges where there’s been prizes, so it’s only fair that I return the favour. Now, there’s only two Grand Prizes, for first place, a nice little Japanese souvenir (yet to be bought), and Second Prize is my deep admiration for your photograph! Well… that’s true for all the recent entries in previous Challenges anyway.

Have a splashing good time!

Winjeel

Some ideas to get you thinking:
Dripping water, with colours, interesting light patterns, splashes, making a mess; conservation, taps, baths, showers; portraits… being wet; health, drinking water vs. other liquids (oranges, ambers, reds, and so on); spills, splashes, dashes, and drips …basically, anything indoors / still life, studio (or kitchen), and wet.

PS:
As per Moderators’ request, all Challenges, from this one on, will be numbered. So please excuse the name change.

OK, here goes  - there's a first for everything...

(I don't have a true macro but the 17-50mm focuses pretty close.  Can you add "tubes" to get closer or is a proper prime macro the way to go? - Just there's a Sigma 105mm f2.8 EX Macro lens on Ebay!  Answers on a seperate forum section!!  sorry!!!)

Photos taken with the new Tamron 17-50 f2.8 lens and a 7D @ 50mm.

50mm, f27, 1/3sec

And the next (very similar)..

50mm, f27, 1/3sec

Two table lamps for the light source.  Photos are of a tall glass jug with a number of "kiddies bath" coloured tablets (for a colourful bathtime with the kids).

Feedback always welcome.  Useful feedback even more welcome !!!

Winjeel, not sure if this is within bounds - taken from my balcony, rather than strictly indoors (I did have one foot inside...)
Feel free to disqualify it if you see fit :)

Hmm... (brow heavily furrowed in deep thought). It is border line, having natural light, but since it's within a foot of the door... and the same image could be replicated in a small studio... hmm... I'll allow it, but if it makes it to the public voting round, it'll be open slather for the voting public.

So far, all entries look good, keep them coming :D

Update:Here's the prize. Even though it's a book, it's actually quite interesting, with lots of pictures that are of all sorts of daily life things in Japan, and it even has some words too! Hopefully, whoever the recipient is, they'll get inspired and look at their local environment with 'new eyes'.

I have 12 that i want to enter and can't make up my mind (except the one thats already in of course), anyone have anything against me putting them all in (at least we would have lots and lots of entries to choose from)? or do i really have to make up my mind? they are different, if i put the serious one in the funny one wont get in etc...
