which flash? 56am or 36am?
« on: October 01, 2007, 01:53:18 PM »
I have a 5D and want to buy an external flash for it.  I don't have any experience in using these flashes and am trying to figure out what level of power I'll need.  The 36 is only $180 on amazon.com and the 56am is $320.

Initially I'd only be using the flash indoors for portrait type lighting and playing around with the wireless function but eventually I'd probably want to try it outdoors.

Any thoughts?  What type of flash do most people here have?

Thanks,
Amy.

Welcome to the boards actionwoman!

I have both.

In my opinion, the biggest difference isn't so much the power, as the versatility -- the 36 is a tilt only flash, the 56 is tilt and swivel... which mean if you take photos in 'portrait' orientation (ie, longer up the sides than across), the 56 is more useful.

But yeah, it's also more expensive... so I'd recommend the 56, if you can afford it :)

PS I moved this topic to the Lighting & Flash board, hope you don't mind ;)

Thanks for the reply - I can afford the 56am and didn't realize the 36 didn't swivel.
