Trouble with HVL43AM
« on: November 05, 2014, 01:01:57 PM »
I have an A65 and I am having trouble getting my flash to show all the info. on screen. I have reset it by pressing the 2 buttons. I have had it less than 2 years but haven't used it much because I shot outdoors mostly.  I have the camera set to ADL and have tried different sony lenes including the kit lens. It nevers flashes green but stays amber. Any thing I can try.

Hi Brendan,
Before we all jump in with ideas can you elucidate a little more.
Can you put the flash atop the A65 and THEN turn both on.
Set the A65 to flash and also TTL.
Inside in a dimmish room, focus and shoot.

Does the flash fire?
If not, will it fire if you press the test button on the flash?

John it will fire by the test button and when I press the shutter. It will change to TTL or manual or multi-. It doesn't show anything else. I was hoping I had some setting wrong. The manual shows all this info that it should show. Like distance. I have cleaned the contacts, tried it with an extension cord, tried on my a300 and and changed and put the kit lens on and it still doesn't. It doesn't seem to change the power.

My understanding of what you are saying is
The flash will fire when you shoot with it atop the A65 but it will not communicate with the camera in the control of amount of light.  Is this correct?
I think earlier you are indicating that the light on the flash stays amber.
I think that you are also saying that the same happens on your A200.
My assumption, the flash itself never indicates fully charged ?

I have an old (like 30 years old) Metz that I used to use with my film cameras.  This does the same and an electronics friend told me he thinks it is the capacitor in the flash not functioning properly.
His verdict was that it was not worth tinkering with.

If I have the assumptions correct you may want to look up flash capacitors and see what the experts have to say.  If I have it wrong please post some more info.  I have only an A58 and the A20 so do not have any direct experience with your model .  Others on here may jump in when they get the feel of the problem.....john

If i understand well you may have the same problem like yesterday when i was holding an HVlf 58am from a friend attached on a900 i figure out that was somthing wrong with the settings on the flash display. It will not show all patametets or even zoom in / out while turning the zoom ring of lens. So at the end i decited to reset flash and all issues were gone ,flash converted to a proper flash ☺ so try a reset by pressing the ( MODE & TTL/M) simulatly / together for aproxuma 5 sec

Thanks for your reply. I had found the reset info and had tried it several times. It didn't change anything. I can get the zoom info to light up in manual. The FN button doesn't anything. There were new batteries in it but I tried another set. Any other suggestions? Amber light only. No distance info.

Do you have another Sony/Minolta A mount camera? If yes try on another body. Also clean the contact with pure alcohol on Camera body and flash wait for a few minutes to evaporate and test
