sony dsc hx400v with Sony HVL-F60M flash - wireless?
« on: January 28, 2016, 12:35:45 PM »
Hello all,

I have a Dsc HX400V which I use to photograph watches for my web (horasyminutos.com in case you want to check the veracity). Since watches are very tricky to capture properly I bought the Sony Ring flash which is great for closeups, but not for a picture of the watch on the wrist, or on a table from a distance. That is why I bought a Sony HVL-F60M flash.

Now my problem is that I seem unable to make it work wireless. I follow the instructions from Sony: I mount the flash on the camera, choose wireless on the camera menu -which automatically puts the flash in wireless remote mode-, then dismount the F60M and raise the inbuilt flash to serve as light meter.

But then the wireless option shows disconnected and when shooting only the inbuilt flash flashes. What am I doing wrong?

Also, it doesn't make sense that the inbuilt flash flashes too, does it? It completely spoils the use of an external flash.

Thank you all for listening.

Sorry it has been posted twice, got a 504 message when trying to post it and I just repeated the process. Perhaps the moderator could delete one of the two.

I dont know the HX400V but it must behave like A6000/NEX6. To work wireless you must have at least flashes one of these flash attach on camera (HVLF20M-HVLF42AM or HVLF60AM) and another flash to control it.

Only the SLR/SLT can control wireless with on in build flash also other flash.

Firstly welcome, hopefully we can sort you out.
I am not familiar with the HX400V and Rex may well have provided the answer.
The flash atop the camera (when wireless is working correctly) flashes to communicate with the off camera flash.  When it is working the on camera flash is of a very low brightness and does not contribute to the overall illumination unless you are in a really darkened room.

Your camera manual ought to indicate if the on board flash supports off camera flash. If your camera manual does not help, can you visit a store and ask to try the HVLF20M on top of your camera. If it triggers the Sony HVL-F60M then that is the reason.
I use one to trigger my F58AM as the A99 does not have a flash.
