Phottix Odin Flash Triggers
« on: January 04, 2015, 02:39:29 PM »
Just bought a Phottix Odin trigger set and an extra receiver for my A77 and HVL-F56AM and Minolta 5600HS/D. These provide the TTL functionality missing from the Pixel Kings (I contacted Pixel King to ask when the firmware would be updated to A77 compatibility and was told it wasn't going to be).

With these older flashes you still have to set the power output and zoom setting but the camera will meter TTL, newer flashes may be more controllable. My flashes also only allow High Speed Sync if the camera decides that the scene is bright enough but the Phottix units override this giving much improved creativity.

Phottix also produce a flash unit (Mitros+, which I can't find in the UK) which includes their own transmitter/receiver tech.

The only downside was that I had to order from the States as Amazon (only UK listing) were out of stock, but they were here in 3 days. I got them from B & H Photo:

The dollar price was about the same as Amazons pound price but I did get hit by import duties (£85.52) but I recon I'm about £30 up on the deal even so.

Did plenty of research on Youtube (Gary Fong does a great demo indoors removing background detail with HSS), before taking the plunge.

So if you're looking for TTL remote flash control I highly recommend these units.

Thanks for the information's Rossi, the Photix is very pricey so I went the pixel and must say I am very happy.

I am waiting for Pixel or Photix to release the new shoe from Sony. Since I have Pixel I would prefer Pixel to buy but it seems Photix is more accurate and stable in the lighting market

The Mitros flashgun is available with the new footplate, but not the Odins as yet. Available adapters should do , will find out next week when I test them on an A99 - will post findings.

Started research on Google with "Sony TTL flash trigger", not many options returned. Then went to Youtube to see them in action. They are pricey but do what you want them to do. Non TTL 'Dumb Triggers' are available from eBay but need more guesswork or a light meter giving more expense.

I have pixel opas and use the connector supplied with the A99.  Not entirely happy as the contact sometimes is loose despite the tightening wheel.  If you hear of the new shoe update Rex, make sure you post it.
Thanks for the heeds up too Rossi....john

Odins work fine with the A99 with the supplied adapter. Best results were flash gun in TTL, Odin controller set to Manual and throttle the flash output from the Odin controller.

"With these older flashes you still have to set the power output and zoom setting but the camera will meter TTL..."

How is it TTL if you are setting the power?
