Killed 2 5600HS(D)'s in 1 night, US repair shops?
« on: August 06, 2012, 04:53:13 AM »
I managed to kill both of my 5600HS(D) flashes at a wedding this past Friday, popped the flash capacitor in both. One before the ceremony, the second just after the bride walked down the aisle. What are the chances of that?!? I'm pretty sure heavy use and high-output batteries in my external pack helped, but even then, what are the chances of frying 2 flashes within a half hour of each other? The kicker was I had a wedding to shoot Saturday also, so I had to stop by a camera shop on the way to the wedding to drop a grand on 2 F58AM's. I LOVE them, by the way, but my wallet has been screaming for mercy this year.

Anyway, does anyone know a good repair shop in the states? I sent my 70-300 off to KEH and has a less than stellar experience, so I'm a but reluctant to try them again.

I would assume that you can ask Sony if they would fix. The other place I would check is precision camera.

Bad luck ...
No joke! This is why I always have a second shooter at weddings, although this is the first time I have had to lean on her so heavily.

I looked at Sony's site. They used to have a link for Minolta gear, but I haven't been able to find it anywhere. I suppose I can call them. And thanks for name, I've sent Precision Camera a message.

I would really be interested to find out what caused it. Two in one night is too much of a coincidence. Was the voltage perhaps to high for it? I would ask somebody at Sony to find out which battery packs are the right ones to use with the flashes.

Pano, thanks for the link. Been a while since I've seen that, forgot completely about it.

Stef, I am almost certain it was the combination of an external battery pack using those high output batteries and the flashes age. At best, they are 6 years old, but probably older, and both had been used heavily for weddings and OCF during normal sessions. That wedding was the first time I had combined the high output rechargables in both the external battery packs as well as in the flashes themselves. At almost $5 a pop, it took me a while to acquire enough to keep full sets and sets of spares to run them in everything. Previously I had been using alkalines, which don't source as much power.

Luke- what kind of external battery pack was it? Is it certified to work with Sony flashes? I would probably also contact those guys and find out why the external battery pack smoked up your flashes???

I just ordered the Calumet Pro Speedlight Powerblock 900 and it said on the website that it works with Sony flashes. I sincerely hope it does!

I was using 2 different types. 1 was the Sony pack, the other was a Yongnuo SF-18. I believe both instructions say something along the lines of "Don't flash in rapid succession for more than x times before waiting for x minutes" just so that people don't overheat things, but when you are shooting a wedding, that kind of abuse just can't be avoided.

Luke- I have just googled it and yes it says everywhere not more than max 10 flash burst and then give it time to "recover". The flashes get too hot otherwise and can burn out.

Yeah, that certainly is a very real risk (as I knew then academically and now from experience), but there are some times you just can't help but stress the things out while shooting events. I wish they would put a tiny fan in the things to dissipate heat more efficiently. Both in the flashes and across the back of our image sensors.

Has there been an answer about where to get the flash repaired? I have a 5600hs(d) that needs repair too. I am convinced that the Sony HVL-F56AM is the same flash - correct me if I am wrong. If someone is willing to use the Sony parts in the Minolta flash, it should work.

I have not had the time or spare change to send them in to be repaired yet, having bought two '58s. I called Precision Camera and they said they will look at them and if they are reparable, it would be something like $110 each.

You are correct, the 5600HS (d) is exactly the same as the HVL-F56AM. The only difference is the branding.

Greetings,

I'm A latecomer to the party, but another fix-it shop you might check out also is Royal Camera Service, located in IL. Hanover Park if I remember correct....  Haven't gotten the A700 back yet so can't comment on quality of work they do but I was happy with cost quoted

Craig, I'll certainly check them out. I actually haven't gotten them fixed yet, so this helps. Thanks!
