Flash lifetime
« on: June 26, 2009, 01:43:06 PM »
Guys Im currently looking at buying a Sony 42 flash brand new. There is also the option of a Sony 56 a year old. What is the lifespan of a flash is it worth while buying the secondhand or getting the garantee of the new 42.
People on eBay seem to pay a lot for second hand flashes!

Can't help with your question, but thought I'd make sure you knew that Amazon are still selling the 42 flash for just over £153.

From my own experience. In theory it is a electronic device with a light bulb that should eventually fail. However, In 20 years with Minolta Sony flashes I have never had one fail. I shoot a lot of events using about 200-500 flashes a week. If the one you see is only a year old I would jump on it. The increase in the guide number or range is worth it alone. It is great to see the value a used unit still holds. Nothing like a used camera body.

I was eying on the 42 and after reading the info on alphastrobist.com where the comparison is made with the 56, I'd say ... go for the 42. I start playing with it today and I am basically new to flash (well, I had a flash more then 15 years ago), this one works like a charm and has a very easy learning curve.

Maybe the 56-5600 is closer in GN Nr to the HVL-F58 but the 42 use the new Sony communication protocol which means is more compatible with your existing camera and eventual future

Don't let all the functions overwhelm you. Stick to the basics for now and enjoy. It is a great flash that's design did not change for over ten years. (The same as the Minolta 5600HS)
A ton of power.

Enjoy.
