Ambient Exposure While Using Flash
« on: August 16, 2005, 04:09:23 PM »

When using the 7D with a flash and controlling the exposure manually,  the ambient exposure value switches to zero, regardless of where it was before, and changes in ambient exposure aren't displayed when the aperature is changed.  I know the ambient exposure can be changed while using flash by using the exposure compensation dial, by that's not very practical when the base exposure isn't displayed.  Is there any way around this other than flipping down the flash or removing the accessory flash to see the reading, then flipping up or reattaching and making the appropriate adjustments?

I just tried what you said and you're right there. The D70 doesn't do it. I mean I never use flashes, so I don't know for sure if you can change this. Maybe someone else here knows?

No way around it. This creates a headache for a whole lot of people and is a known shortcoming of the 7D. It's weird, really. Film cameras don't have the same problem: the Maxxum/Dynax 7 certainly doesn't.

There's a free e-book on the 7D and flash photography available for download at that link. You'll have to register at the site. Small book, helpful in addressing certain issues with the flash. No workaround for the one addressed in this thread, however.

People have written to KM with the problem. Hopefully we'll be seeing another firmware update, unless the problem's hard-wired into the electronics, in which case... we won't.
