Am I doing it wrong?
« on: August 28, 2012, 05:44:40 PM »
Hey folks, been searching the web and can't find an answer.

I have a 56AM flashgun, and I want to use it as a kicker for some portraits. My key-light will be a Norman 400w strobe with an umbrella. Now, my question is this; I know I can use the 56 as an optical slave with the on-board flash with my A700, but I can't seem to get the 56 to fire when the Norman fires. Does it not pick-up the flash and use that to fire, or am I missing a setting somewhere? I currently have HSS = On, WL = On (so it works with the camera flash) and Ratio = Off. I put the 56 in Manual mode, and it says it's on Channel 1. Am I missing something, or can this flash simply not be a straight Optical Slave?

Thanks in advance.

Hi if i've read this right what I think is hapening (taking into account your studio flashes have an optical sensor) is that when the onboard flash fires it fires a preflash for metering which the 56 ignores but recieved the info from and then fires as the shutter opens, wheras the studio lights are triggered by the pre flash and are going off before the shutter fires hope this makes sense

More info. Not sure if on the a700 you can turn off preflash on the onboard flash, you can't on the a580 so what I do is either use my hvl58 on camera in manual mode ie no preflash or use a wireless flash trigger which triggers the 58 and in turn triggers my studio lights and works perfectly albeit all manual

I see what you're saying, Andrew, and thank you.

To be clear, the Norman strobe is firing with the shutter thanks to a PC Sync cable. I am hoping to have that fire the 56.

But what you're saying makes sense. I'm guessing the 56 doesn't have a light sensor per-say, as much as it does have an inferred sensor that corresponds with the one on the A700. The Norman, clearly, does not have such an inferred sensor and as such, I suppose it won't work. I tried it with my (work-issued) SB800, and it has a 'Slave' mode, and a little light sensor on it. Reading THIS THREAD a little more, and reading into that little gadget that receives any flash signal, that looks like my answer.

Thanks for the input!

If I remember it correctly it is the other way around: you can fire your strobes with the onboard flash or the 56 but not the other way around. You might want to check out the top three stickied threads here:

yes i dont think you can trigger sony flash guns from non sony flashguns, as said i just use cheap wireless flash triggers connected to my 58 which then triggers the optical sensor on my studio lights

I use a cheap optical slave mounted to the A58 so that it fires when the studio flash fires (via synch cable from the A700).  The on board flash on the A700 is not activated and camera set to manual of course.
Works fine as a floor light or small light behind an object.  The optical slave just needs to in line of fire from the studio flash...john

Yeah, I read through that first one there, and saw that little receiver. Gonna have to pick that up soon. Thanks!
