5600 HS D with 7D

I have had my 7D for about 6months now and just picked up a 5600HS D as I wanted to enhance my indoor shots beyond the built in flash.

I am using the 28-100 D lens that came with the body.
(I have some other, older, decent non-D lenses that I have also tested with, but have been trying to use this D lens  in an attempt to get the 5600 working in full auto mode.)

I have a few "challenges" that have me concerned that the flash and camera are not fully talking to each other.

1) The flash manual claims that I should be able to toggle the flash to AUTO mode by pressing the Flash ON/OFF button to toggle it to Auto mode.  I cannot seem to get the flash to go into AUTO mode.
It is only in TTL mode.

2) I the 5600 set to HSS.  The 7D manual claims that the 7D should show a H indicator and it does not.

3) I have tried the camera on both full P mode and custom P mode, which I prefer and I get the same results, as it seems to be working all the time in fill flash mode.

The 7D is set to Fill flash for flash mode and ADI for flash control.

I am suspicious from some of the other posts that the camera and flash need to be sent in to be calibrated or something?

Somehow it does not seem to be working in AUTO mode.

I am getting good results with it if I bump up the flash a half setting.

Any advice is greatly appreciated as I have tried all that the manuals advise and have looked around on the postings, but thought I'd check to see if anyone had a similar problem or if I am missing something with settings that I may have wrong.

(sorry I can't help with your Q, I don't hae the 5600HSD, and I use my flashes as studio light, so they are the only source)

I think for HSS, do you need to be in Tv mode and set, for ewxample a shutter speed of 1/500, anything above the normal sync speed of 1/200 or whatever it is?

I shoot my 5D or 7D with 3600HSD soley in Av mode

For fill in, I think you need to be in Av mode also.  Dunno, I'm a bit of a newbie to the flash world

Hello Dave

Well come to the forum.Even If i don't owing the flash 5600HS i will try to help you.

As Dcap said you must have a higher speed than the HSS from the camera ( more than 1/160) in S mode or M mode where you can choose the shutter speed alone and not the camera

You must be sure that the lens is (D lens) other wise you can not work with ADI  only TTL.

You are right that some cameras and flash they need to be send and recalibrate for overexposure,underexposure,flash fires after rear HSS and etc ( but not always)

Before you send them check also what i suggest

That makes sense for HSS and I will try that.
Still trying to understand if I should be able to get the 5600 HSD Flash into AUTO mode so that I see the AUTO indicator on the flash display when the 7D is in P or full Program mode.

Is there any other setting on the Camera of the Flash that I need to set to put it into Auto mode?
Again, still seems like it is only functioing in a fill flash mode.

The lens I am trying is a D lens.

hss will only work in auto mode if there is enough available light to use such fast shutter speeds.

Thanks.  I learned finally that I should not expect to see the AUTO indicator on the 5600 using with my 7D, from a posting on another board.  That is primarily what I was concerned about as I thought that meant the flash was not fully communicating with the flash.  The 5600 manual was confusing me some.

This is very late, but I have the same setup as you and the flash manual does not mention the 7D. I think it was printed before the model. Thus it makes it very confusing. I get the same results as you. Auto never shows. It must be for older models. I get great results shooting thru a 32" silver/white umbrella, to knock out the strong shadows using wireless, and the onboard flash. And, with the 1:2 ratio control also. I keep the asa at 100. I am very happy with the camera and the flash. I use Photshop CS2 and shoot in RAW + fine mode in Adobe-rgb. Then I use the Adobe raw converter in Photshop to get 12 bit per color sensor data. I then use the auto convert mostly, and save the file to tiff after the adjustments. That eliminates the jpeg compression problems, but takes more hard drive space. My H-P printer has an Adobe-rgb profile and that is my working profile in Photoshop. I need to get another 5600 or 3600 for two flashes. Still trying to learn what all the modes and control stuff is really doing. Cheers.
