3600 HS (D) Flash I just got one
« on: January 27, 2006, 02:00:17 PM »
I tried out taking pictures fo my friends baby and was pleasantly surprised at how much better it is than using on board flash. For a start it's quick and by the time the baby blinks I have alread taking the shot . Before I took shots of kids who were all blinked at the on board flash.

One question ?.. can you triger the flash off without usin the builtin camera flash. I wanted ot experiment with just side lighting etc

I don't think you can, the onboard flash fires for a TTL reading, although the wireless communication is through IR, if I'm not mistaken.

Hope someone knows whether it's possible though.. I've never felt the need to do so. Studio flashes can spoil you..

Off board / Wireless Flash

As far as I'm aware the latest KM DSLR's are not compatible with the Wireless IR flash triggers (I believe to do with the ADI & Preflash system) I'll actually need to get out my wireless trigger and try it with my 7D and 5600 and see if the above is wholly true?
As for using the on board flash as the wireless trigger, I've found that the response of the off board flash is instantaneous (this is with the 7D and 5600 plus all my film dynax's and also 3500xi flash)

My experience is with the 7D and the 5600HS(D) I believe the 3600HS(D) is just a less powerful version.

I believe you can trigger the 5600, 3600 flashes using a sync cord connected from camera to flash, or by wireless sync using the built in camera flash. I use the later method with very good results. The built in flash acts as a fill in flash, while the 5600 gives the main lighting.

Hey Gforce, how do you rate the 3600 generally ?
I need a decent flash but have been a bit put off by the 5400's performance issues although the power is a big attraction.

The 3600 sounds good generally and my previous flashes have been rated about the same output and been ok but doing more outside sports events means the power is very useful. I could compensatae with higher ISO, a few noise artefacts won't show up in motorsports shots when they are all chucking loose gravel about anyway.  I don't do studio so swivel is no value to me, tilt is occaisonally handy though.

Also the 3600 is affordable over here, the 5400 is very pricey especially if it is a problem child to boot and with the KM/SONY thing upgrades and software all become a bit more up in the air so to speak.
