Telephoto lens question
« on: May 04, 2011, 05:20:54 PM »
First off thank you all for your valuable input on my quest to be a better photographer.

One of things I have been looking for is good 400mm tel.
I mite have found one. And at a good price.

Its a Tamron 200-400mm LD iF 5.6 and its a good one. I have read the good and bad about this lens and it seems up to snuff of being a good one.

Random shots taken are sharp even at 400mm 5.6 mite be a just little soft. Hand holding an tripod about the same. One stop down and and its sharp.
Focus is pretty fast for me, faster than my 300 f4.5

I know most of you love the 70-400G but can not justify the price tag.

Any thoughts or comments on this lens?

Has anyone found a lens case to fit it. 5"x7" with foot attached.

Thanks again,

Ron (ronny)

After searching for pros and cons I have bought the lens, and guy gave me great deal.
He needed the money and this lens was not used a lot.

The only issue and its minor one is at 400mm f5.6 wide open its a touch soft.
But sharpens up at one stop down.

Most lenses, with the exception of top quality glass is never at its sharpest wide open and benefits from being stopped down.
Show us some results with the new toy :-)

Thankyou all, I am posting some test shots in the 'Photo Critiques'
This way we can have an open discussion about lens.

Let me know what you think..

Oh wow looks like the new lens is great!

"at 400mm f5.6 wide open its a touch soft. " So is my 70400G. I tend to use it f6.3 and f7.1 ..more at 7.1 in sunshine..sometimes f8..depends.

I see you got a converter as well. Nice.

You will have a ton o' fun with this. "No bird to big .. no bird too small..." ;)
