Sony vrs Minolta lenses by price
« on: April 22, 2008, 07:54:40 PM »
Ok I know the Sony lenses are new and the Minolta lenses are second hand but part of the discussion in another thread piqued my interest and I thought I would do a bit of research...

Using Warehouse express for the Sony lenses and matsuiyastore on fleabay where possible for the Minolta...

SAL2470Z 24-70mm f2.8 Zeiss £1229       Minolta 28-70mm f2.8 G  £488.57
less than half the price although not the full range of the Sony...

SAL70200G.AE 70-200mm f2.8 SSM G £1729   Minolta 80-200mm f2.8 HS  APO G  £756.07
less than half the price although again not the full range of the Sony...

SAL85F14Z.AE 85mm f1.4 Zeiss £997.00    Minolta 85mm f1.4 G (D)  £604.65
not quite half pricebut not far off it...

Not questioning that the Sony quality is undoubtedly better given that they have the Minolta techs and newer technology but I am also fairly sure that these Minolta lenses are going to give admirable quality too for a lot less...even taking the gaurantee into account as the ebay store in question has been recommended here and has excellent feedback 99.9% positive.

This may not apply as much to other countries because there taxes are not as extortionate and quite often the price for new in £ is the same in $ even though the £ is almost double the value of the $. Unfortunately importing new gives headaches with duty and vat too...:)

Not sure wether this is of interest to anyone else but as I was doing the research anyway I thought I'd share it...:)

Think this is a little bit unfair :) Theoretically you might have to pay import duty from Japan on the secondhand equipment.  It's no different to new from what I can make out.

So if we don't mind getting the Sony kit from HK, we have (from EBay)
http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Easy-to-find-good-toys-in-my-town

SAL2470Z 24-70mm f2.8 Zeiss £963       Minolta 28-70mm f2.8 G  £488.57

SAL70200G.AE 70-200mm f2.8 SSM G £1234     Minolta 80-200mm f2.8 HS  APO G  £756.07

SAL85F14Z.AE 85mm f1.4 Zeiss £667  Minolta 85mm f1.4 G (D)  £604.65

Now that does make interesting reading.  The KM prices are really holding their own.  The prices from secondhand dealers/EBay traders in the UK are obviously higher than "matsuiyastore".

The first step is admitting you have a problem.

Yep :-(

The prices are definately getting higher on good lenses, Beercans are selling for anything upto £125 at the moment.  6 months ago they were £60-£70.

And as for the real quality lenses, then name your price.

Fair point about the import duty on second hand being the same as for new...that changes things...I will have to look into it more carefully if I decide to buy...but they did once have a 400mm f4.5 G and a 300 f4 G neither of which sony do yet...:)

Had a lok at the customs and excise thing for the uk...

It would appear that although the import duty may be lower on second hand goods the vat will still be the same....

Worse they will decide what the value is irrespective of the value marked on the package...doubt they will value it lower though...they also for some really obscure/twisted reason add the postage cost in  before the calculation...:(

Essentially if you decide to import to the uk you should allow for roughly 30% on top of price and postage...

Some will get through...most won't it seems they have tightened the net over the last few years...:(

Anything valued under £18 is exempt(not including postage) and any gifts valued over £36 are also liable to get charged. It sucks but thems the rules...short of emmigrating there is not much we can do...:(

Hardly worth the hasssle unless the price is well bellow 50% of the cost here...

But they seem to be catching less and less items.  A couple of years ago they seemed to catch everything no matter the value but nowerdays they very rarely seem to pull anything that I have bought (including when I got the 200macro,85 1.4 and 28-70 for matsuiyastore last year) :) So I suppose you take your chances - ps VAT is only 17.5% and duty is only a couple of percent so I would only work on a 20% mark up if caught.  My rule that I work on is if it is less than 70% of the cost in the UK it is probably worth risking.

I got the 30% of the ebay forum so it may not have been that accurate...:)

20% sounds more reasonable if that can term can be applied to our overtaxation...lol.

I think from the USA, if the declared value is under £32, or its marked as a gift, then there wont be any import duty.

I know when i bought my Sigma 70-300 from chinaarts in HK, it was marked as a gift and the value was marked as £10.
I still got nobbled for import duty :-(

Its alright marking the value of item lower than they are, but if something goes wron then the insurance will only pay the marked value.
