Sony Stoped production of SAL 300 f2.8
« on: February 02, 2012, 12:17:08 PM »
I called Sony and asking some information and prices and this lens is currently out of production.
Does it means that a new one is coming?
Do they want to make space for the 500mm f4?
Will it be replace by a new cheaper one version?

In my A77 box included was a small booklet of Lens & Accessories. In the model name column for SAL300F2.8G it reads 'Build to order'. My guess you can place a special order.

Its available at the Sony dealers in Dubai. Cost is around USD $6500.

I hope so, I always thought that the 300 f2.8 was way overpriced, maybe they plan to bring out a 300 f4 for a third of the price of the 2.8.....

Always fun, are lens prices, Gordon. Handbuilt would obviously mean a higher than mass produced baseline, with very little wiggle room for price cuts.

Mind you, looked at a review of the Canon 70-300mm L f3.5/5.6, with a RRP of £1100 - this appears to be a direct competitor to the Sony 70-300mm G f3.5/5.6 which is nearly half the price. Sony aren't the only ones with silly priced lenses....

Gordon you said, "maybe they plan to bring out a 300 f4 for a third of the price of the 2.8....." Good point for sure.

I think the same and somewhere here opined that Sony needed a 400/f4 instead of the pending 500/f4 which will cost as much as a small kingdom.

Why a 500/f4 for (say) $10,000 instead of a 400/f4 for perhaps $3,000? Probably simple PR, so they look cool at sports events next to the Canikons big boys. Sony will sell a mere 2,000, 500/f4 lenses but could sell 50,000 400/f4 lenses. Go figure. I certainly could not afford the 500/f4. Here...

My brain and that of Mr. Sony are on different wavelengths. ;)

I'll second Clive's opinion. If Sony wants just to show off/swagger, why not to make 400mm/f1.8 ...

400 1.8!!! Wow these are all the BIG TOYS FOR THE BIG BOYS :o

I just hope sony comes up with a CZ 35 1.4, more SSM in DT line and a new weather proof 70-200G. Actually weather proof in all their new mid-high price range lenses ;)

Hi,

In my opinion, and it's a sad one, Sony will nevere have the line-up canon has,
300,400,500mm lenses, L lenses, etc.
offcourse Sony has the Carl Zeiss lenses (4 to be exact) compared to 15 l lenses.
I don't think Sony will invest the budget for making new lenses, they even ended production
of the full frame cameras, They now have the translucent mirror technology.
I had one in my hands, and to be honest, it looks like a game console, you don't look through the
lens anymore when you look in the viewfinder, but at a small lcd screen, that was the reason
I sold my DSC-H5 bridge camera and went to DSLR.
