Sigma DG 70-300mm F 4.0-5.6 Lens
« on: June 16, 2016, 02:59:28 PM »
Hi, I'm new to the world of photography and lenses. I've recently purchased an alpha 100 and was wondering if the above lens would fit as I've seen a reasonably priced one on eBay. If it doesn't, can anyone point me in the right direction of what to look for when choosing a compatible lens.  Sorry if this is a stupid question but as I say, I'm still learning. Many thanks

Hi Mikeroberts859 - and welcome to the forum.

As long as any lens you see states ' for Sony A mount' it will fit on your A100.

Sigma make lenses for their own camera range but probably sell more of their lenses they make with that camera's lens mount: Canon, Nikon, Pentax.

The Sigma 70-300 lens data sheet as well as other information: http://www.sigma-imaging-uk.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=103

It would probably serve you well to 'research' any lens you consider buying before you buy it so I'd also recommend you check out this site for their information/reviews for all/most "A" mount lenses: http://www.dyxum.com/lenses/index.asp and the home page: http://www.dyxum.com/  I wish I'd been aware of it from the beginning :)

Firstly, Welcome to the forum, and I hope collectively we can support your journey.  What is a good price?  Looking at the lens on the Sigma site they are selling for $139.
Unless your e-bay price is an extremely good price, I would be inclined to buy it new.
I am not familiar with the lens but for that price it must be in the "kit" lens class.
Also the A100 is rather old technology now but a top class camera when it was released.
We all have our budgets to work to and recommending things out of price range is not really an option. I used the Minolta 70-300mm kit lens for a few years before upgrading.

If you decide to continue on with photography you may need to look to upgrade camera and lens down the track a bit....john
