Sigma 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM Grinding
« on: July 05, 2011, 10:51:46 PM »
Hi,
I bought the sigma 50mm 1.4 in April after a lengthy period debating between this and the sony 1.4 50mm. It is a great lens and I have had many good shots from it - once you get used to the sheer amount of light it lets in! Anyway, this weekend it started to make a short burst of grinding sound just as the focus reaches infinity. It was slightly alarming so I emailed sigma who came straight back to me saying to send the lens in and they'd look at it. I've boxed the thing up and am sending it off tomorrow - has anyone else had this experience, or know what causes it?

I'll keep you posted on the quality of service/repair when it comes back.

Oh dear it may be a stripped gear problem which Sigma lenses are prone to

Unfortunately what BB says is true. I have 3 sigma lenses that I use on my A700. Recently my 24-70 F2.8's gears stripped.
This was after a few years of regular use. Not sure whats going on.

I stripped the gears on my Sigma 50-500mm on the A700 before I saw the note from Stef to set to "slow focus".  The 17-70 though is so far OK....john

Oof that sounds bad - I assume that it is warranty covered and that it will be fixed or replaced as that would appear to be a relatively serious compatibility flaw if the lenses don't work with the cameras for which they are built!

I stripped my Sigma 70-300 on my a100.  I focused it manually for awhile but then it got to hard to turn and I heard a ratteling sound  so I took it apart and found that the gear itself had slipped out of position and was floating around.  I found that it had eaten out about a 1/4" of the plastic ring gear on the lens body.  The gear and shaft are made of metal (and would have to be I suppose) but the ring gear is just a molded plastic and the teeth are very fine.  It's easy to see how it could strip the ring gear.

Stripped gears on an HSM lens?
Is the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 an HSM drive lens on Sony mount, or is it still screw drive?

Tom - doh - glad someone is paying attention. If its a HSM lens the gears can't be stripped by the camera.

Hi
Well I sent the lens off to sigma. They repaired it and sent it back after 10 days fully working again under warranty. Apparently the motor needed replacing no explanation why.

I went back to my 50mm standby (minolta 1.7 50mm) and really noticed the difference and missed the sharpness of the sigma. Glad to have it back but I live in dread of a similar problem recurring after the warranty runs out.
