Sigma 24-70mm HSM lowish price
« on: March 02, 2010, 10:09:03 AM »
I just got the Sigma 24-70mm HSM for my A900.

It is currently £569 at Clifton Cameras with 2 year warranty which isn't a bad price I believe.

I'm hoping it will be a good copy...

Yes please do let us know how it performs. Is it a f2.8?

Yes. It is the constant f2.8 28-70mm IF EX DG HSM. Supposed to compare favourably to the CZ depending on which review you read.

My only impression so far is that it is heavy ;)

I might get a chance to try it out tomorrow. Will post samples.

Not the best test shots, but the 24-70mm HSM works well as a portrait lens (both these are at 70mm on a Sony A900, studio flash).

Need to test it properly at some point - haven't had the time. It does seem pretty soft in the corners and edges if you pixel peep, but I need to do a fair comparison with other lenses and make some prints before passing judgement.

This is at 24mm f6.3.

A bigger version can be downloaded here for closer inspection:

I've had a look and am pretty impressed with the clarity and sharpness throughout plus it's a good image.

First of all congratulations on your purchase, from the looks of it, the output seems to be of high quality. Keep them coming so we can have a better view, however, if you are already satisfied that all it matters. I read a lot of reviews on this lens it competes closely with the CZ 24-70. Enjoy it.

Thanks for looking.

Until I make some bigger prints I won't know whether I am satisfied or not. I usually use primes so I have always been dubious about the quality of zooms. I think that zooms have undoubtedly got a lot better over the last few years and this is just a prejudice on my part.

I just need to block off some time to convince myself ;)
