I saw that lens recently, large filter thread and motor inside? Some sample shots looked good indeed although I think the Minolta bokeh is marginally better. (I have the Minolta 50/1.4)

I was Googling around last night as I'm wondering if the Sony or the Sigma 50mm F1.4 would be the best thing to get for my first true "prime" lens.  Pricewise, there's quite a difference of over £100 between them.  The Sigma has a 10 degree wider field of view and is also less than 200g heavier than the Sony equivelent.  As a plus, the Sigma also has the same filter size as another lens in my collection so filters can be swapped as/when required.

I also read something about the covering material on the Sigma "peeling off"?  Has anyone ever encountered this before?

Best regards

Gavin

Can anybody give me information on this lens and how it would be on a a850?
I have the A900 (which has the same sensor than the A850) and the Sony 50/1.4 : this lens is excellent. Wide open, the edges aren't sharp but it's better than the Minolta 50/1.7.
In regards to this french review, you can consider the Sigma 50/1.4 HSM which seems to be better than the others 50mm : the bokeh is more creamy and it is the sharpest in the edges.
The only negative point for me is its weight (it's the reason why I sold the Sigma and I kept the Sony). :)

I am also looking at the 35 mm 1.4 G lens and wonder if that would be better?
A 35mm is very different of a 50mm. I prefer the 50mm which is more versatile (for me).
If you wonder if a 35/1.4 would be better than a 50/1.4, it depends : the sharpness is clearly better with the 50/1.4 whereas the bokeh of the 35/1.4 is just magic. Each lens has its avantages.
The problem of the 35/1.4 is the price. I think 35/2 has better value for money. You can find here a comparaison between three 35mm with the A900.

There is a review of this lens in a comparison of fast lenses in February's 'Digital Camera' magazine UK.

Their conclusion was that whilst it may lack features of other manufacturers' lenses,  inside it's great class, providing stunning optical quality.

I have one and I certainly noticed a big improvement in sharpness, lovely bokeh and vivid colours over my kit 18-70mm lens.

I lurrve my nifty fifty.

A very simple and straight forward review. It should be noted, that according to DPReview.com only the Pentax 50mm is better, when they compared this with other 50mm's. It is a pretty awesome piece of work, to me. Thanks for sharing the link.
