We of course do not need OS.  I have an older version (screw drive) bought for just that reason, replacement for the kit lens.  It does not get much work as I do not do much landscape stuff but I am quite happy with it.... john

This new version uses a new design for all the lens elements, the only thing the same is the min and max focal length and the max aperture at 17mm.  The max aperture at 70mm is 4 instead of 4.5 for the old.  Max magnification is reduced too.

HSM is a winning feature of any Sigma, since it means no gears to strip.  I'm very conscious of saving weight so the extra grams needed for the improved speed and OS/HSM aren't for me.  The earlier one also focuses slightly closer than the new one, though the difference is small.  I'm very happy with my 'old' model, but in either case, it's a great design.

I found a review at last:     http://lenstip.com/223.1-Lens_review-Sigma_17-70_mm_f_2.8-4.0_DC_Macro_OS_HSM__Introduction.html.
Any other reviews that may have slipped me by? ?

The local agent in South Africa tells me that these lenses have not being released yet, but the web and the review above tell me differently. Has anyone here actually brought one or seen one in a shop???

I checked out the specks again last evening and it certainly seems to hold it's own against both Sony's offerings (16to 80 and 16 to 105)!! Have i missed anything??

This will replace a 28 to 70 minolata kit lens on an a350.

Can you still buy the older version new?

On this new version do you use the OS with the In-camera SSS or just use one of the two?

(I'm looking for a replacement for the kit 18-70mm lens)

(the f info is incorrect it should be 2,8 to 4)

The information in the site above and in the Sigma literature is quire clear. With Sony or Pentax, use one OR the other. (Some Pentax models do not support the HSM).
Not sure of the consequence of using both but the counter compensation may stress either or both mechanisms. Trial and error would be your best friend.
By the way, does anyone out there have one of these in their grubby paws yet, I really am keen to hear or see some "real people" results.
Concerning the older models, the South African agents approach is to deny the existence of the new model until all his old stock is sold. I am hanging in for the HSM, and slightly better f stop and resolution. Also looking forward to evaluating the respective OS systems.

Sigma often launch or announce lenses without actually making them - to guage interest. I wouldn't be surprised if this is not actually available anywhere yet... I certainly haven't come across anyone getting hold of one.

Good luck though!

By the way - I'd be very very surprised if this really did stack up against the Sony/Carl Zeiss 16-80!

Well, as I have mentioned, the Polish bunch at  http://lenstip.com (look under reviews) seem to have reviewed one, and Bristol Camera say they can get one in 3 days, so ...... I don't know.
The Lenstip review shows really good resolution but at the end of the day it looks  as if the CZ wins,it's closer than I thought it would be,  but on price, the Sigma will walk it. Check out the pros and cons.
