« on: May 28, 2010, 07:28:41 PM »
Hey,

I'm about to buy a new Sigma 10-20 ultra wide.
Does anyone of you have experience with this lens?
Is it good? I would pay 440 euro.

Didi- I had the Sigma 10-20mm and was very happy with it. I know though that some people had a bad lens sample and they had focussing problems. Not sure- but I think it was Rob???
I would buy it immediately again would I not be on full frame.

I have had one for a year now and it's a very good lens. I'm pretty happy with it. It's crazy wide and you'll need a bit of experience before your shots being to look like you want them to. It's a fun lens, for sure. Initially I was having a lot of open spaces in my pictures! Gottta fill the frame well.

Probably one of the most discussed lenses on the forum - have a browse through old threads (search for sigma 10-20 gets 8 pages of results!)... I haven't owned one, but the impression I get is this:

inconsistent quality.
If you get a 'good copy' you'll be satisfied.
If you get a dud (a real chance it seems) you'll be horrified.

I hope I get a good one, it has to come from Rotterdam.
If it turns out allright, I'll keep it.
If it's a bad one, I'll go to Rotterdam and try out the rest they have and take
the best one home with me again or go to one of the other shops that Rotterdam has.

Didi
I would like some more sample shots from you guys to see the possibilities with it.

I have this lens and have been very pleased with it so far, got it about a couple of years ago.

The biggest problem I have is that its too wide for certain situations.  Its one of those lenses I pack if I'm expecting a close encounter with some large machinery or a ship.

What surprises me the most, however, is that Sigma released another version, but in a constant F3.5 rather than being variable.  The 3.5 version was also about £200 more expensive when I bought mine.

Best regards

Didi- I had the Sigma 10-20mm and was very happy with it. I know though that some people had a bad lens sample and they had focussing problems. Not sure- but I think it was Rob???

Yes, i had two copies that were pretty awful, straight out of the box. One had really bad back focussing issues, the 2nd copy was just soft at all appetures and focal lengths. In the end i went to a local(ish) shop and tried out a 10-20 and a Tamron 11-18 side by side, one of the copies in the shop i tried was poor as well, the other copy was on a good copy, but the same as the tamron, which i opted for in the end.
Hopefully youll get a good copy.

Rob

Hi,
no, it is not a HSM, they only make those for nikon and canon.
Some shots with the 10-20 are here:
