Recommend a lens for my A300
« on: October 15, 2015, 12:38:55 AM »
Looking for a lens for my A300. Currently only have the kit lens. (And a couple cheap Minolta lenses, wasn't able to snag a beercan)

Going to disneyworld. Looking for something that is smallish in size, good for disney type pics. (Mostly bright, wide angle with some zoom, portraits, don't need ultra zoom)

Don't really want to break the bank on a $1000 lens.

Thanks.

Firstly welcome and I hope you stick around and show us a few of your images from Disneyworld.

Now to your question
There are so many ifs and buts in a question like this that I have to put a few caveats.
Are you ever likely to want to go full frame or are you happy to stick with crop sensor?
Many years ago now I bought A Minolta 5D which came with two kit lenses 17-70 and 75- 300mm.
I replaced the smaller one with a Sigma 17-70 which was sharp and did the job.  It sits in the cupboard now as I moved to the full frame A99.
So have a look at this lens.
The other one that will not break the bank is the Sony 18-250 (and the Tamron equivalents 18-250 and 18-270).
My wife still uses the SAL18250 for weight and reach.  It is not G lens quality and not G lens price either.

others on here will no doubt chip in as well...... john

Thanks for the quick reply. Sorry to all that I posted the same thread a few times--not sure how that happened. Mods if you could please delete the duplicates. Thanks.

I think I'll stick with a crop frame for now.

On my A200 (which is the same as an A300 but with a slightly better OVF instead of out live view) I opted for the CZ16-80 as the upgrade from the kit lens, as the extra reach and IQ of the CZ were my priorities. I also had a Minolta 50 f/1.7 for low light (This was second hand, new you could get the Sony 50 f/1.8).

The alternative would be one of the Sony 16-50 f/2.8, Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 or Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 HSM (with the Sony being the best of the three).

A good place to look when thinking about a new lens is the Dyxum lens database (http://www.dyxum.com/lenses/index.asp).

This is basically a huge set of user reviews of the many various lenses that fit on the Sony A and E Mount cameras (you need A Mount on the A300). You need to bear in mind that these are written by owners of the lenses, so some reviews may be somewhat biased, but a lot of the reviews are by very experienced photographers, and what it does do is allow you to give a comparison between similar lenses.

Looking at the Tamron as it seems to be a great bang for the buck. Can't find it available anywhere really in Canada though. Everywhere it's a special order.
