I got myself the sony SAM 50mm F1.8 the other day. I've not had much of a chance to take many photos but it looks good so far :)

Nice one Brenda.  You will find it very useful for low light no flash shooting...john

The more you use primes, the more you'll appreciate them. I've been shooting 3 primes, Minolta 20mm f2.8, 35 f2, and Sony 50mm f1.4 and it's a great setup for me as I get extreme light gathering and they are light weight. Yes there's 3 lenses but I usually have my 35 on my a900 for most shots.  Plus you get to walk around to zoom in instead of standing still and zooming in. Get a lot better shots too. I recommend picking up the 35 1.8 too and try to use those lenses exclusively for a little bit and see if you notice yourself trying to get different compositions. It definitely works. Ive learned a lot on composition just by being forced to get different angles to get a shot with the primes.

Congrats on the new lens, you'll enjoy it!!

You're spot on about being forced to think about composition when the 'stand and zoom' option is taken out. I'm loving it, definitely worth the money :)

I love the primes I have, and am thinking about getting more and go back to just primes like I had in my early film days.

I had all Minolta gear then, X700 with MD1 motor drive, 28mm, 50mm and 135mm glass.

Primes are awesome. I'd like to get a minolta 85 prime or the Sony 85 but it's a bit too pricey for me.

Love my trip of 20,35,50 on the a900. It's a perfect trio for primes. I have a 24mm minolta but don't use it often. Mostly just on my minolta 7D infrared camera.

Yeah I thought about the MF 85's but I like AF too because I'm too slow at MF. I did think about the 85 2.8. Have to see how it does on my a900.  But not in any real hurry either. Plenty of time to look!

The Sony SAM 85mm f2.8 is outstanding optically for about $300.  Its not a 1.4, but it is excellent.  I had one for a few weeks, but returned it when I found a deal on an old Minolta 85mm f1.4.  From f4 on the Sony was every bit as good as the Minolta, and very close at f2.8.  Of course, I shoot mostly at f1.4 or f2.
