Need a long zoom
« on: June 03, 2005, 11:34:35 AM »
Hi all, I'm looking at getting a longer zoom to finish off my lens collection. I'm thinking 170-500 5-6.3 or 200-500 5-6.3 range for use mostly with a 7D. I would like a full frame lens that I could use with a 7 but most the newer zooms are only coming out in digital models, so I might need to look at 135-400 or 200-400. What are people out there using? What are your likes and dislikes? I mostly use a 80-200 2.8 and telly converter when I need the extra length but would like a lens where I can do away with the telly converter. It will need to be a general purpose lens i.e. will be use for everything.

Yes I have posted this in other forums for those of you who think it looks familiar.

Thanks
Scott

The one that seems to shine in the review stakes is the Tamron 200-500.  steer a very wide distance from the Tam 200-400.  These lenses are not related!

Pro (from what I've read)
- image quality looks good
- spec list from Tamron looks impressive

Cons
- gets real big .... 19" .... that is like 0.5m in new money
