Title: How good is the 70-400 g2???
Post by: steve on June 22, 2014, 05:15:39 PM
Hi. Ive been paid for a few weddings and thinking about getting the above lens . I have the sigma 135-400 apo and its to soft wide open for me. Also have the 70-300g which is a good lens but it got damaged at a football match. Still useable but not repairable as the plastic is split on the body. Is the 70 400g2 very sharp wide open??? Looking to use it for sport and wildlife shots with my A77. Ive seen a couple reviews on you tube but just want to know is it sharper than the 70- 300 g ?? Also seen some nice shots on here : )
Regards Steve.

Yes; it is sharper.

I don't own one YET... but have access to one that my best friend purchased when it was released.

A VERY nice lens that WILL out-perform the 70-300 G in every way.

Not quite, but the only advantages the 70-300G has are price and weight (and it's a bit more discrete, but still faitly lrage @ 300mm with hood attached!)

The 70-400g2 and g1 are both sharp even wide open. I got my hands on the G2 and love it. The G1 is a great lens also but the auto focus isn't as fast (only real difference).
