Beercan, or just ???
« on: August 23, 2008, 01:14:52 PM »
Can someone tell me if this is a Beercan lens?

I found a Minolta lens and the seller said he was fairly certain it was called the Beercan.
I have never seen one so I can't say one way or another. The lens is in really great shape and I can get if for US $20.00 including shipping.

Here's what is printed on the lens ring: MINOLTA AF ZOOM 70 - 210mm 1:45 (22) - 5.6.
The lens does extend approx 2" when you zoom from 70mm to 210mm.

If not a Beercan, would it be good enough to get as a lens to use where there is a lot of dirt like at car races?

Thanks

that is not a beercan, the beer can is a steady F4

it will not have any dash after the F number

that other one is just a standard lens

i would suggest holding out for the real thing as they are supurb for the money, and even compared to much higher priced lenses

There is a reason that even though i have migrated to primarily G lenses, I will always keep my beercan family (24-50 F4, 35-70 F4, and 70-210 F4) and that is they are great lenses, maybe not as fast as others but very sharp, good bokeh, Built like tanks, and fantastic color.

The first step is admitting you have a problem.

Thanks Theo
You have Beercan lenses (24-50 F4, 35-70 F4, and 70-210 F4), didn't know there were more than the 70-210.  I assume that all are the fixed f4 and would have MAXXUM written on the inside lens ring. Just like to know so I don't get the wrong lens.
You guys and gals have saved me from getting some bad stuff and I thank all of you.
The only Beercans I have right now are empty Bud light, but hope to get some real Beercan's.

they call them the beercan family because they are all fixed F4 lenses, and the 70-210 is probably the best known, however just to confuse you there is a 75-300 4.5-5.6 that is called the big beercan because it is built like a tank just like the original 70-210. but i would suffest sticking to the f4 family and if you nee longer then 210 find a good zoom or prime
