another lens query
« on: July 24, 2014, 05:29:09 PM »
yep, I know, another one.

still looking at changing the quantity of glass in my big bag, and am thinking about another option

I have and don't use the Sigma 18-50dc, Sigma 28-300dg, (twice repaired, once for a broken zoom lock and once for gear stripping and makes rough noise when focusing).

Also, was looking at replacing my Tamron 70-300 ld di for a newer version.

I would like some thing that gets close to 500mm, have looked at reviews for the Sigma 50-500 and 150-500, and am now thinking about the 120-400, is this good enough to use for cropping pictures taken at at airshows and for wildlife photography.

I could be persuaded to let my Sigma 400mm f5.6 non apo/macro prime go too, have seen them for sale around the £150 mark and more on ebay.

but what do you all think?

thanks in advance

Hi Gordon, If you are not using those Sigma lenses and the Tamron 70-300 then you may as well put them up for sale - 'though it sounds as though the 28-300 may be difficult to sell on... due to the repairs and noise!

If you have something that takes care of the 70+ range up to 120 and you are thinking of the Sigma 120-400 then it may be a useful lens.

I don't have experience of that one or the others you mention but I do have some of of a Sigma 135-400 f/4.5-5.6 APO. I don't use it now with having the Sony 70-400 (mark 1) and will probably put it up for sale soon but feel I need to try it out with the a77 Mk-ii...

If you 'really' want or feel the need for a 500 reach then the 400s wont do it for you - which you already know... even 500 isn't enough at times I've thought and wanted that 'extra' reach. Even when, with the a77 (Mk1) I've shot in jpg and used the 70-400 with the 2x built in zoom converter - making the 400 apsc of 600 in to 1,200mm - - - or the Minolta 500 f8 mirror (750 apsc) in to 1,500mm! Shame that 2x doesn't work when using RAW :(

Hi Frank, thanks for the reply.

I have and love the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 which is stunning, I also have the Sony 18-70 which is in Jans bag with her A350 and Tamron 28-300, I think I could possibly not need the 20mm between 50 and 70, I still plan on getting the newer Tamron 70-300, or possibly the 18-270 as it appears to be quite good so may be able to crop a bit to get the 300mm result.

I have seriously thought about the 50-500, but on the A700 with battery grip, its a very heavy combination, hence asking about the Sigma 120-400, as for 500mm, I do have the Minolta mirror which I will keep as Jan loves it too
