a57 lens kit
« on: April 28, 2015, 06:21:53 AM »
Hi

I am not an experienced photographer hence this question.  Is there a extender kit that can be used on the 18-55 and 55-200 standards lens that will allow greater zoom capability

Firstly, welcome Colin.
You can get 1.4 times and 2 times convertors for Sony lenses.
The 1.4 will as the name suggests give 1.4 times the zoom so 100 mm becomes 140mm at the expense of the loss of 1 Fstop.
The 2 times, gives 200mm for the 100mm lens with 2 Fstops loss.

I have no experience with your two lenses but I suspect that you also lose autofocus when you add the convertor.....john

Welcome Colin,

to add to what John has said, using a Teleconverter will increase the effective range of the lenses

With a 1.4 tc your 18-55 will become a 25-77, and your 55-200 a 77-280.
However, the max aperture will also decrease by 1 stop (so the 18-55 will end up as a 25-77 f5.6-9.5) and you will lose some quality.
You would be better off getting a 70-300 zoom, which will give better range, max aperture and IQ than the 55-200 + 1.4x tc.

The 2x tc gives greater increase, but the 2 stop penalty, and greater loss of IQ would make it virtually unusable.

Where teleconverters are useful is when you have a reasonable long wide aperture lens - such as a 300 f/2.8 prime - the (relativity) modest cost of a good 1.4 tc will give a 420 f/4 for a fraction of the cost of a 400 f/4.5 prime.

In regard to the above, and correct me if I am wrong, the Sony tele converters (white ones) are compatible only with the white lenses available.

Yes pointblank is absolute right. If you want to use a teleconverter then try the non Sony, such Kenko.

Sony/Minolta teleconverters work only with white G lens and the 135 STF

Folks  thanks for the feedback
in summary I was attempting to get a cost favourable solution to allow zoom capability for distance shots, where I find that the 55-200mm F4-5.6 Lens doesn't get close enough.

As I have mention I am new to photography so would appreciate your advice - should I buy a 300mm lens - if so what would you recommend.

Colin your e-mail address tells me that you are in Australia but whereabouts?  If you happen to be in Melbourne, you can have a try of my 50-500mm Sigma and the 300mm Minolta kit lens.  ..john

Until 300mm you have 2 options
1st  http://www.kurtmunger.com/sony_dt_55_300mm_f_4_5_5_6_samid336.html
2nd http://www.kurtmunger.com/sony_70_300mm_f_4_5_5_6_gid224.html

Don't underestimate the cheap plastic 55-300 is a very light and good alternative to the big heavy G lens

Can you give an indication of budget, and if you would consider second hand?

To get 300 mm you can range from the basic Sigma 70-300 which is (in UK prices) £89 up to a Sony 300 f/2.8 G II (at £5499!).

I suspect the latter is more than you are aiming to spend
(it's a very good lens though!)
