70-300 Lens upgrade
« on: July 05, 2014, 10:54:39 AM »
Having had my trusty Tamron 70-300mm f4-5.6 Di LD Macro now for a few years, I think it is time to change it for something a bit better.

Do I go for the newer SP USD version at around £290, the Sony 55-300mm f4.5-5.6 ED SAM at around £260?

I would love to get the 70-300 G SSM, but the price is a bit rich for me at the moment.

thanks in advance everyone

Gordon McGeachie the 55-300 is a very good lens but it is SAM not SSM as you already know.

You cant use DMF in (A) automatic focus mode. If you want manual focus you have to switch the lens button. DMF is a must for me if I am not shooting at sports. The 18-135 is also SAM the same year introduced but with a new system that release the micro motor clutch after confirm autofocus and revert to DMF automatically.

thanks for the replies guys...........I have often wondered about SAM lens` before and how you go to manual, so thanks for the explanation Rex.................

I suppose if I sell a kidney, I could get a Used Sony 70-400mm F4/5.6 G SSM II for £1249

I am looking at changing because I went to the Waddington airshow arrivals day on Friday, and after looking at my pics, I decided something better is needed...........they just lack the extra bit of punch and crispness

Gordon since I bought the GII and lately the SEL70-200G4 I am not using at all the 70-400GI. If you are interested I will consider selling it.

I would spend the extra to get the Tamron, if budget was limited to sub £300, but if you can stretch to £400 then you are looking at s/h 70-300G territory.

I am thinking towards the Tamron, but as you say, I may get a second hand G for a little more
