Yup, I know thre is a rumour of a cheaper 70-200/2.8.

What I meant is that if the new 70-300 would have been an f/4, I would have had serious thoughts of getting one instead of the 70-200/2.8 G.  I would have bought the Sigma you (Stef) bought had it been available when I was looking, but they were not in stock anywhere.  $1100 USD seemed like a good price.  The one I finally tried was not as good wide open at the long end as I had hoped.  Then again, it could have just been that copy of the lens.

... but than it will be much cheaper as well I suppose ??? Are there any available at the moment of the "older" 70-200 here in the UK or do all shops need to order them first. (Obviously for the around £1100 mark or I could immediately go to the Sony store ;) )
Stef.

Stef
I have just ordered the 70-200G from cameraworld online for £1,200 (exactly same spec as on the Sony site at £1,800 so assume that this in not this new CZ version that people are talking about over at dyxum) and they have phoned me to say that they haven't got stock in store but Sony have and that they will get it in next week.

The first step is admitting you have a problem.

Why am I not surprised that you ask ;) Yes I did. Now I have exactly the problem described in other threads- bad conscience- not for the money but for the other lenses that might become redundant... the only thing that might make those other lenses not redundant is the weight of the 70200. I can't see myself lurking it around while a lens such as the beercan can come easily with me in my camera bag. Also what I don't like it the costly/professional look of the 70200. It is hardly a lens that goes unnoticed- something I really don't like. (Will probably strap it over with duck tape...)

The weight doesn't bother me (broad shoulders) but know what you mean about the look as was proved at the Springsteen concert.  At least the 70-300 is black so not quite so obvious!

I am a bricklayer by trade, so the lens does not bother me.  It is solid and heavier than other lenses though.  the thing feel like solid cast iron!.

Handyman's secret weapon...duct tape!

Yep the 70-200 replaces the 80-200 (which I will be selling) and the 70-300 will go in to the general walk around bag for when I don't need the 2.8 but need the extra range of the 300 without having to carry the weight of the Tokina 300 f2.8 :)

From the images in the other thread I must say your 80-200 seems to be pretty good as well!
