This DSLR takes ... movies.

"Today Nikon reveals its upcoming D90, the first DSLR to capture your vision in still or movie formats. And it's now available for pre-order from Calumet Photographic. With innovative features like video capture and refinement across all the camera's functions, the D90 shifts the DSLR's capabilities further than ever before.

High standards have been held with the D90's revolutionary D-Movie mode, promising up to 720p HD shooting with built-in sound at a cinema standard 24 frames-per-second. The D90's SLR design effectively offers options available only on the top level of camcorders. For instance, interchangeable lenses open up extreme macro and wide angle possibilities plus depth of field control.

Still capture is equally (if not more) impressive, incorporating much of the new technology from the D300, D700 and D3 along with brand new features. The D90 features Nikon's integrated Dust Reduction System on its 12.3 megapixel sensor along with ISO from 200 to 3200 and a 4.5 frames-per-second burst rate. And full-featured Live View allows you to shoot from the camera's 3" LCD monitor. For extremely accurate autofocus, the D90 implements 11 points of 3D-tracking, subject recognition and a new Face Detection System.

Features

12.3 megapixels
Dust Reduction System
ISO range of 200-3200 (expandable to 100-6400 ISO equivalent)
4.5 frames-per-second (100 JPEG or 11 RAW per burst)
EXPEED image processor
4-step Active D-Lighting
Scene recognition and face detection exposure
11-point AF system
D-Movie function for HD720p video capture
Advanced Wireless Lighting support with built-in flash
3" LCD monitor with 920,000 pixels
Live View
In-camera retouch including:
Image straightening
Lens distortion control
Fisheye effect
D-Lighting
Red-eye correction
And more"

I'm really interested in the "and more." statement.  What are they holding back???

This is very interesting....

HD Video!  Wow!  Not needed for semi pro photographers, but the majority of the people who buy these camera also has a video cam and isn't a semi pro!

Another interesting camera is the new 50D.  15MP and is supposed to be 1->1.5x better at High ISO performance over the 40D.

Times are interesting.

I guess this means I will soon be getting an upgrade to my 1960’s model Minolta 8mm Movie Camera.  LOL.

Video from a semi pro or pro DSLR, I can only assume these new features sell cameras and simply gain market share.  I am certain we could see video in future models from Sony.
As Springtide stated “today’s times are quite interesting”.  I have had the pleasure to see so much change and improvement in the last four decades from Minolta, Konica, and Sony.  My fellow photographers, the future holds many great things for the Minolta Legacy!
Thanks for letting me share,
AJ

I suppose it was the next logical step with the limit on optical zooms on camcorders to start using interchangeable lenses - I wonder how quickly it will fill memory cards?

"Fisheye effect"? That's aimed purely at amateurs. I can't see that being artifact free. Oh, and that HD Video, too. When will the d90s come out, with wireless internet connection?

The face detection system is probably going to be good, though.

That's awesome, that's going for the throat at Sony.

BTW, I just remembered, the Sony point-and-shoots, have a face-and-smile recognition software. So, when your subject is in focus, it won't take the picture until the instant that the person smiles, and in THAT instant, too. However, I doubt the A900 would have this included.

Mind you, £450 for the A700 with the 18-70 lens is more of a steal Smiley

Kidding. Here, I saw today in Bic Camera, a cheap electronic store, the A700 was still at Y160,000! (800 pounds)
