Can any tell me why my photos when linked to the forum/posts - when I do - show smaller than those of other members? For example... this image was resized as per the new guidlines put up by fother, edited Sept 2006; Optimising photos in Photoshop for posting in the forum [ http://www.dynaxdigital.com/index.php/topic,1862.msg12873.html#msg12873 ] for 700 pixels on the long edge and saved for "web and devises" in CS3;

and this one is edited for brightness and contrast;

They take up less than half the width yet images posted by others occupy the full width Huh Even if I resize in CS3 at 800 pixels, long edge, or use the Microsoft Image Resizer for either a screen size of 800 x 600 or 1027 x 768 they still show here as small... which shows very little of the image!

Guidance please... 'though it may be down to my photo host site Huh

Thanks "again"!! Smiley

I am getting 400 x 266 reported for this, it looks small and is 59954 bytes.

This is a little confusing as some members are posting images that appear 800x??? but when you copy them they are much larger and have just been resized by the brouser, so the client has had to download a larger picture anyway.

Yours is reported as the 400 x 266 and is not resized by the brouser for me. I can only copy the small version that i see. Nor does it suffer the nasty interpolation jaggies that the over size ones do.

Incedently I thought that the size was 800 along the longest size and under 200kb?

I thought it was 800 also Tim but the figure shown is 700... seem to recall a post saying it was 800 and not 700? Maybe I need to be putting in double, ie 1600 on the longest, and see what happens? Wink

I'm putting in the 700/800 pixels but as you see getting small images - even with those saved a "large" in the MS image resizer Huh I'll try the double measure and see what happens... if still small then it must be my host site Photobox Sad

Thanks Smiley

Frank

edit; Just tried and uploaded the two saved as different files, checked the properties tag and shows as 400 x 266... must be the host site Sad

edit #2; Even uploaded full size only show as 400 x 266 in a post!

well Frank, the file you are pointing to in the link to your image is just that size, not the 800px size you are expecting, so there must be a problem with how you are resizing the image, or maybe there is something when you do your photobox upload that resizes it for you to that size.

When you resize the image on your computer, do the properties of the resized file say 800px? If so then it's something in the upload that's resizing them.

Thanks Gazraa. I've done a properties/summary and have this info for the images in the first post;

#1 image is showing smaller than expected at 4272 pixels w x 2848 pixels h, 96 dpi & 545 kb
#2 image shows as 700 pixels w x 467 pixels h, 96 dpi & 10.1 kb [12kb on disk] - this was selected size wise in CS3 as the other explined in the other posting.

The other attempts selected/saved in CS3 [copy of first image] show at 1600 pixels w x 1067 h, 72 dpi & 801 kb [804 kb on disk] and the copy of the darker image shows the same except for a size of 1.08 mb, inc. size on disk.

My final attempt was with the full size images. The first one shows the same size as #1 above [4272 x 2848] BUT, surprise, at 72 dpi Huh and at 3.70 mb on disk.

Image #2 shows same as above [4272 x 2848 & 72 dpi] and a size of 4.32 mb. When i uploaded these full size images they were showing as 400 x 266 Huh HAS to be something with Photobox.

There is an additional queer thing with this. If I am logged in to my albums I can select an image and get one on the screen showing the size as here. IF I right mouse click on the image I can view a LARGER image... So, you may be thinking why am I not linking to the properties address of this larger image? A sensible question... AND it is something I've done in the past... so why not now? BECAUSE the images then vanish from the post/forum Huh The "correct" way to do this with Photobox is, as per their site instructions;

Question
  I'd like to use an image that I have in my account on another website, but I need the link to it. How do I know which link to use to show my picture properly?

  Answer
  There are several steps that you need to follow to get the address of an image, as follows:

Links to individual images only work in Public Albums, so first you need to make the album Public.  Click the Share this Album link next to the Album on your albums page. This will take you to the Sharing Wizard.; you need to click the Public option. Once the screen refreshes, you'll see a link to the album, in the format http://www.photobox.co.uk/album/123456. Copy this, and log out of your account using the 'Log out' link at the top right.

Paste the link into your browser,and visit the album whilst logged out. Next click on the Thumbnail tab to go back to the photos. Choose the photo you want to use in the other website, either the thumbnail or the larger picture that you see when you click on the thumbnail. Now right-click on the chosen picture and choose the "properties" menu item.
This will show you the address of the individual image - it's a long line of Code towards the middle of the window - this is the address that you need, so maybe copy and paste it to the clipboard so you can use it elsewhere.

This is exactly the way I do the posting of images here. The "queer" thing I mentioned earlier Huh There Is NO option to right mouse click and select view larger image Huh and the "slideshow" option [logged in or out] show the same size images as here!

I've had some problems/issues trying Flikr... it tells me I have to have cookies enabled [which I have] but it doesn't acknowledge so I can't use Flikr on this laptop - HAVEN'T yet tried setting up from my desktop PC so I have that option. There are a couple of other photo hosting places I can try... as I did soon after joining here... so I haven't given up yet Smiley

One other thing with Photobox; I have a Virgin Media Photobox account - comes with having a VM broadband account - which is the one that I am linking to/from. There is also a NEW Photobox BUT [ cheesy cheesy ] although I can/have set up an album there and gone through the process of changing it to a PUBLIC album so I can share images here, it remains PRIVATE when I log back in Huh The "logged out" link address is; http://www.photobox.co.uk/album/54946658 - but I can not view and get the properties of an image via that link...

I have contacted their customer support and I keep recommending that I install and use Firefox to try to access that way! As I don't have any other issues with IE why, as I ask, should I use Firefox? The guy says it may help while they tackle "technical issues" with the site Huh Huh

Sorry for giving "another" tale of woe - I'll be getting [if not already got] a reputation for things not working out right cheesy

hmmm well it sounds to me that when you link to a photobox image it only serves up the smaller version of the big image, which makes sense as you don't want to link to massive images, but it looks like they have gone for a more conservative 'web' size than we use here.... only guessing though.

As for the flickr cookie problems, I believe in IE in Tools > Internet Options under the Privacy tab that the level of privacy you have set may be causing the cookie problem.... possibly. I have mine set to medium and flickr works fine on it.

Unless of course you have some other software (ad filter etc etc) which may be blocking cookies and causing the problem.

Firefox is good though Smiley

Frank, which image version on flickr did you link to? On flickr it displays a smaller size (like the one you've linked to) but you do get access to the larger file by clicking the little All Sizes icon above the image, did you choose the large version?

Add a link to your flickr account if you don't mind.

Frank there do appear to have been problems with flickr recently.  On my work PC a couple of time recently some of the options like 'see all sizes' haven't worked when clicked and right mouse button doesn't work.  I have had to clear history from my internet settings and then they work again but not sure what has been happening.  I have logged a query with their help but they haven't come back yet.  My home PC however has had no problems but is on a different operating system.

That's a good question possibly... not sure as I'm new to Flickr and how it works - sorry... more than one size option Huh I noticed that some of the other members pictures are the same size as mine are now from Flickr... at around 500 X xxx and others are the 800 X xxx - is that because of the size option in Flickr ? I'll go check it - thanks gazraa Smiley

Oops about the Flickr account link - that would be my "logged in" page ? Sorry for not quite getting it Embarrassed

Thanks Fud... I'll try to keep an eye out for that. As to gazraa... being new to Flickr I'm trying to get my head round their different settings - like tags and sets? Sets I've found I can only have three if not a Pro account. I'm sure the explanations are there in the Help folders but I just wanted to get stuck in Smiley

My original problem stems back to just before the end of January when I set up the account. I've a Yahoo account [with having some Falconry related groups] so it should have been easy as... kept getting messages on trying to log in that I couldn't because Cookies wasn't enabled... when it was and is. Now with Firefox [ Huh ] everything seems OK for the Flickr account.

Hi gazraa

I've looked and looked but don't see any boxes to select for image sizes Sad

I've looked through the "Help" and found something to do with what you mention - so I know what you're talking about... but can't as yet find the option to activate the larger size option you mention. I've SEEN it on a sample page for some one called "George".

I also uploaded a full size image - not edited to a smaller size - and it shows at Flickr as 500 wide... they resize automatically, which surprised me!!! I've also uploaded four shots from my beercan [Minolta 70-210 f4 Macro] and they too have been resized and I've linked to them in a post in the "Images to share" section.

Is this what you wanted?

Frank, I clicked on the link in your last post there, it took me to your photostream.

I then clicked on the first image (Sig600mm_24A)

On the new page, above the image, was a small button saying 'all sizes'.

Clicked on that - it loaded the large size (687x1024) and gave options for 335x500, and various smaller sizes.

Can you replicate that?

Many thanks fother... that's the bit off information I'd missed; CLICK ON THE IMAGE first to get another page and then see the "all sizes" mag glass icon at the left corner! Thanks Smiley

Frank

IT WORKS... it works... you've let me loose now cheesy MANY thanks.... Wink
