Yes! Spring is here
« on: March 30, 2011, 04:08:36 PM »
My little feeder is getting vary busy as of late.

The Cardnial has found a mate. She is shy though.

Song sparrows are not usually seen as one.

Black Cap Chickadee can't stay in one place.

These are taken though a kitchen window and are modified to remove reflections.
Crop to remove backgrounds.
As always comments are always appreciated.

Ronny

Thanks for sharing your selection of birds. (I am envious! ;) )

Birds are a great subjects and can be difficult. Depending on the size and shape of your yard, you might consider setting up some sort of blind (hide) and perching stations made of real branches.

Funny thing about the chickadees. Hyper little guys. We don't get them in our small town but they are common in the nearby city. Not sure why.

Good luck with spring. Looks like we finally maybe getting some decent weather...we still will get snow if the past few years are any indication.

Have fun.

Regards

Clive

Thanks so much for the responces, I wasn't sure if the shots would be good to post here or on Critique.

Gordon, Sapphire,Smudge and Fudge.  They must be fun to watch at the windows looking out at the birds.

Clive,  I may be the water or because of the larger birds near by. Now that I pay attention to them.
most will run and hid when large shadows appear. Being made by Turkey Vultures over head.

I have a plan for just such a feeder in the back yard.   Across from my work shop 12x24 shed is a walnut tree with some bushes.  I have gathered some small trunks with sturdy branches still attached.  Going to drill some holes for the seeds and place them between the bushes with a water source or bird bath.  I can hid in the open shed door for cover, I hope.

I also want to have humming bird feeders near by but not sure how they will get a long with each other.  Not sure how far apart to place the feeders.  So will have to see.

Yes Spring.. Almost April and still only 36 degrees during the day!

Here is mate, she was hard to catch not in the bush.

Thanks John I appreciate it.

I'm so pleased you intend to make a bird friendly garden - the pay off is you get to watch and take images ;)
Clive's advice is great. Water is always a big attraction - we have a wildlife pond so we don't have to worry about filling a birdbath. There's a few things you can do re providing 'natural' perches next to feeders and there are various websites with advice re making your garden bird friendly.

THIS ONE looks good - it's packed with pages on allsorts of different things and is an American one. Ours don't give advice on Humming birds, you lucky person ;)

LOvely images. I love photographing birds but there seems to be a dead zone over my little yard :( We have plenty flying around but no matter what I try, they just want to land there :/

Thanks to everyone I finally found a nitch, if you can't get to the birds...bring them to you.

Pat thank you for the link, its one I have not found so new info is great stuff.

One huge plus is my wife is also enjoying watching the birds.  Also seeing the photos.

Debbie my advice is keep trying and look at the link Pat gave us.  Try to find out what kind of birds are flying around and then find out what food and seed they like. Placing seed where they have access to see it. Close to bushes helps hide them if predators are around.
The chickadee seems friendly,  He comes flying right in to the bush while I fill the feeder. He was as close as 12" from the feeder and me.

Numpty thanks for the nudge I can only get better from here on.
