The best picture I will ever take...
« on: March 13, 2010, 01:56:37 AM »
(Sorry is this in innapropriate, but it was'nt  taken by a Sony/Minolta Camera)

This won't win any prizes for technical ablility or skill or photographic knowledge, but I honestly don't care, and I firmly believe I won't take a better picute in my life.

Its a long story but I'll try and make it a bit shorter.

I took this picture when I was 11, I was on a holiday with my parents in Cambletown (Scotland), this would be the last "proper" family holiday we would have as sadly my Mam died about a year after this picture was taken, she was severely ill on this holiday but tried to hide it.

Anyway, we had a day out to a small island (cant remember the name) that had religious paintings in a cave about half way round.
On the way we met a German couple who were lovely and pretty much walked me around whilst my dad looked after my Mam.

We managed to get to the caves but it was getting late and the tide would eventually rise and trap us on the island with no houses or anything at all.

After a lot of rock climbing and fun (for me) we eventually got to a place were everybody could rest, it was just about hitting dusk and I saw a little boat passing on the sea just over from the island, this is when I waited and took this picture of a boat in this sun with a crappy disposable film camera:

This is a quite bad scan of the actual photo.

After this picture we managed to get of the island before the tide rose too high.

And thats why this is the best photograph I will ever take, not because of the technical ability, but because of the meaning.

Thanks for looking.

(ps: this is the photograph that inspired me to start up photography again and will continue to do that)

That is a moving story TSOPTC and makes me misty.

I agree with you .. this could well be the "deepest" picture you will ever take.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful story.

Best wishes,

A very moving story and thank you for sharing this with members.I agree with fother that this image should be framed and seen by all every day as a reminder that we are all on this earth for an allotted time so do good things to be remembered by.

My thanks also along with those of the others before... that is an absolutley GREAT shot, should be framed and hung on the wall. For a "crappy disposable film camera"... brilliant.

It's to be hoped that there is some one or company than can get the full potential from a scan OR you can find the negative for it and take it to a professional because of the meaning this shot has for you.

All the very best

It is the best picture you will ever take. Pictures are stories and you tell this story well. We see so many pictures and do not know the story behind them. I thank you for this story. I agree it should be framed so people can know more about you. What a great inspiration to start taking pictures. Something from the heart.
Thanks again Tim B.

Cheers everybody, was'nt sure whether I should post this or not, but as everybody here is so nice I though I might as well.

It was quite emotional to post it with the story becuase I havent really thought about it in ages, but glad I did now.

I also think that all I have of this is the picture itself which is'nt the biggest, I dont mind framing it, but wouldnt mind a decent quality bigger sized one!

Cheers

Without reading the story, I'd say "No way, I'm sure you'll do will take another stunner". But then I read the story, which reminded me that photos are anchored in a real context, that at least the photographer knows and perhaps a handful of other people. Photos can be tethered to memories and experiences, which makes them really special. Some of the most memorable photos ever taken weren't taken with a Carl Zeiss, G lens, A900, or STF, and so the equipment used doesn't matter. It is a great image, tied to an  important personal story. But you never know, you may take at least one more important / memorable photo in your life. :)

Good that you've turned something negative into a positive thing and that you've put your emotions into something to spur you on to better horizons - without forgetting.
Better to remember than forget. Better to turn it into learning.

A nice story - thanks .
