Down at the Honk and Shout
« on: March 18, 2010, 04:17:32 AM »
WARNING! This is the first of two posts with ten goose pictures. And THEN I will stop..I promise. Maybe. ;)

Okay, here is the deal. The geese are "frisky" and practicing for the next couple of weeks of breeding. They fight and preen and fluff their wings and flap their wings and wash themselves (by dunking) as if they have some sort of dirt phobia. Highly entertaining to watch.

So here goes...one more post after this and that's it for geese from me...til next time. :P :D

All yesterday with the 500 mirror.

Running off the interlopers.

Showing off ...

This is one of the washing and drying shots ...

Just a wee joke.

I like them all especially No1 with water over the head. What shutter speeds did you get to freeze the water and with a lens at f8?

Great 'splashy' images! The first one is a stunner. The water over the head is spot on.

Thanks all. They are highly entertaining to watch as they get ready for nesting. When the light is right, it is fun to walk across the road and watch them for a while. I will post a couple of low quality funny shots in a new thread.

Regarding speeds. These are mostly at 1/1000 or 1/1250 second at ISO 400 and 640...we had some high haze for a while that cut down the light intensity so the ISO was boosted a bit.

FYI...some may not know this....on sunny days when you really need fast speeds, boost the ISO ... in good light you will not see any noise at ISOs of 640 and 800..even to 1600 if the light is good. This is not something you want to do as a rule, but you can get away with it now and then. Micro noise can be better than blur in some instances.

Cheers!

Great shots again! I never tire of seeing your Canada geese. The first is brill and the last Funnee LOL Made Mr W 'larf' too LOL
Thanks for the ISO tips too - I'm always a bit shy of upping that far but these images show it works well - given the right conditions.

Cheers!
