Flowers seem to be the go!

heres one i took with a kodak DX 4330 nil adjustments and no photoshop used either and i DONT  have a macro............i reckon it turned out pretty good what do you think?

 this was taken on the open country road called a pig face. I love the intense colour and this was a natural photo.

Like #3 the best Denise - background doesn't distract from the flower.

I think the position in the frame of the third one helps it as the first one has that edge chopped off and the second one has the more distracting highlights around it. The colours are all good though, it's a shame you couldn't have got a bit more light on the second one though.

A macro lens will enable you to get a lot closer which I think would improve the shots. Maybe you could try a screw on filter/diopter which will allow you to get closer and still be fairly budget friendly.

Getting in close allows you to fill the frame with the colour and intricate detail of the flower

For such a camera, that's good work. You could improve sharpness with a tripod, or resting the camera on something and using the timer, so there's no wobble when you push the button. Though, the last one is the sharpest. Let me know how you go.

Thanks gazraa and doctorwho  and winjeel for the advice much appreciated and i understand what you mean. I might look into the filter and try my luck. a tripod i dont think i can attach a tripod to that camera but i just bought a DSLR so hopefully the photos will improve!
