which way to go for a second body.
« on: January 04, 2013, 01:08:32 PM »
Ok, my plans to get the Sony A77 have been parked for a while due to financial obligations (more on that in a minute) but I do need a second body for some freelance work. The A700 is more than capable for my needs at the moment so I have a few options for a second body.

A second hand A700 body. There are a few for sale on here and ebay for a more affordable amount.

One of the newer, lower range bodies. Prices are similar to a second hand A700.

What do people recommend?

.... and the reason for the financial obligations.... I'm getting married this year :D

Congratulations :)

If the A700 does what you want, then getting a second one for backup looks an obvious choice - if you get one of the lower spec bodies you'll always be wishing you had the second dial, big OVF, etc - and end up deciding you 'need' an A77...

hehe I know I need an A77 (wedding present anyone??) but I'm thinking another A700 is the way to go. Ease of use is probably key for a second body.

I put a congrats on your other thread but a second one will not hurt... congratulations and I would not hesitate going for a second A700 unless you have a collection of FF lenses than a second hand A850 might fit  the bill.... john

Gazraa- congrats!!!
My suggestion would be to perhaps look at the Sony A57. It has very good low light performance and it has video. I would really advice you not to disregard video straight away. It does not mean that you will have to become a filmmaker but it is astonishing what kind of still shots one can get from shooting video. I have no idea about prices though.

While the A700 is certainly a good choice in the sense of you not having to get used to a new camera, on the other hand the newer models do deliver quite outstanding performances and they have little bells and whistles that you might want to miss once you get used to them.

I will be hanging on to my A700 and A850 as A700s do not seem to be selling for very much and the A850 will continue to give me the pleasure of using a FF with OVF, until I get the itch to get an A99 which may not be soon as the A77 seems to be almost it's match in many areas.
