Flickr....Really??!!
« on: May 21, 2013, 11:52:28 AM »
I try my best not to be the guy that resists change, just because of change, but so far I am not liking the new Flickr. I will keep at it, but the user interface seems like there are less options.

Anyway, I know it is new and will give it some time to grow on me.

Thoughts from others??

IMO they are trying to compete too much with 500px.

To me where Flickr are failing though is the clunky coding of their site. The updated site takes allot longer to load, is not as smooth as the old site (or 500px) with a much clunkier feel.

This 'flat' tile look seems to becoming the trent at the minute and I am sure they will work the speed issues out soon enough :)

First thing I thought when I opened Flickr up was, oops I went to 500px by mistake! :)

I must admit, I am getting a little annoyed with the 'new' site! Trying to navigate around is like accessing the site on old 486. Pictures are taking an age to load if they do at all, the site is jumping all over the place and just not working how it should.

I've not spent a lot of time on the new Flickr site yet - initially it look OK to me and loaded quite well! Could be it misbehaving with other users trying to find their way around the new set up Dave (vaughaag) and the time that's taking.

In mentioning 500px... I'm not sure about that site at the moment. They have changed (increased) the subs for it I feel quite considerably... although there was the option to by as many years as you wanted to - 1 at a time! - before the deadline they gave for doing so. I didn't buy 'extra' years and really don't know if I will...

It will be interesting to see if Flickr will increase the cost of their Pro account later - although they state it stays the same... at the moment.

Definitely looks like they are having some issues today. I seem to be missing some photos as well. And I have a set of a friend's wedding that is private, took me a long time to verify that it was still private.  Logged on yesterday with no issues. Some growing pains perhaps. Will wait and see.

I got fed up last night, backed up all my pictures using Pi.pe and cancelled my pro subscription.

I have noticed that the site has changed a little again this morning, no doubt in an effort to speed it up and make the experience a little better.

Are they refunding any if your pro account fees?  Just curious cause I had resigned up for 2 years earlier this spring. Would hate to just give them that money if I decided to leave. Gonna give it more time though.

Thanks
Fred

It said I was due a refund but I only had 4 days left so I wont expect anything.

I don't understand the need for Flickr pro accounts; I have been following Gary Friedman's age old recommendation: I have three sets of external hard drives: Primary, Secondary and a third which I update every other week and keep in a safe away from home. Sure, the total is now 9 T, but with the declining cost of drives, not an issue. And I get to keep all my RAW files. I use Flickr only to post on DD Forums!

Marc,

For me, Flickr Pro was a financially viable option. I share allot of Photographs and Poster, Flyer etc designs with clients. Often they are large files and having them hosted on my own website would have been an very expensive option. Current projects alone sit at 3.2GB.

As far as backup goes, I have that covered with onsite, offsite and cloud storage.

I have just finished setting up a home 'cloud' system as I dont really want to be paying out any more subscriptions than I have too :)

Haha, yep not too much left there..lol.

I am just a month or two into a 2 year subscription. So a little more. Still not sure what I will do. Flickr was always a good place to link to my photos. I have never uploaded full size photos there and have all on mine backed up on hard drives. (thanks for that Pi.pe info, that looks very nice.)

I am thinking if I am going to pay for a hosting site, I am liking what I am reading about smugmug. But I don't sell, so maybe Photobucket will be all that I need. Their update made them better, still the old flickr was just so easy to organize and customize. Oh well.  Something I will continue to think about.

As much as I may not like the new layout, clunkyness, the sites slowness and the way Flickr have gone about things ref the Pro accounts, I see no reason to stop using the site as I have done in the past. I cancelled my Pro subscription as it was due for renewal and the 'Free' account would enable me to do everything that i wanted to.

I can deal with the adverts, my browser blocks most of them already and according to Flickr, I am only using 11.36% of the 1TB storage so plenty of scope there.
